CAMPION HOLDS ONE-STROKE LEAD AFTER FIRST ROUND IN MATTAPOISETT
Lee leads Girls Division at the Fidelity Investments Junior Classic at The Bay Club

MATTAPOISETT, Mass. — Max Campion of Brookline, Mass., fired a 2-under-par 69 Tuesday to take the first-round lead of the Fidelity Investments Junior Classic at the Bay Club. Suzie Lee of East Northport, N.Y. carded a 1-over-par 72 en route to the Girls Division lead.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Fidelity Investments Junior Classic at the Bay Club is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at the Bay Club at Mattapoisett. The 98-player field features players from 15 states. The Boys Division is playing the par-71 course at 6,971 yards while the Girls Division is playing at 6,284 yards.

Campion played a consistent round, never recording any hole above par on the front nine. His back nine traded birdie for bogey twice, but a 30-foot birdie putt on the par-4 No.18 left him 1-under-par on the back side. The tree-lined fairways of The Bay Club's course were no obstacle for Campion, who credits his superb round to the accuracy of his drives and ability to keep the ball close to the flagstick despite large greens and tough hole locations.

“This course is great for my game. It's playing pretty long and that is beneficial to me,” Campion said. “Tomorrow, I want to go out there and have a solid day and drop birdies. I just want to have another consistent, under-par round.”

Following Campion tied for second are Kramer Hickok of Plano, Texas and Blake Morris of Waterbury, Conn., each having carded a 1-under-par 70. Tied for fourth are Brian Murphy of Wilton, Conn., Daniel Walker of Earlysville, Va., and Alex Palmer of Lancaster, Pa., each with an even-par 71.

In the Girls Division, Lee, who earned entry into the Fidelity Investments Junior Classic at The Bay Club through the AJGA Qualifier Series on Sunday, holds a one-stroke lead going into the second round. Having only played the course during the official practice round, Lee had limited knowledge of the course. The lengthy track played to her favor and her drives were the highlight of her round. On the day, Lee recorded three bogeys and two birdies.

“This isn't a short course, so that helps me because I'm a long driver,” Lee said. “I try to just treat every hole the same and hit fairways and greens.”

One stroke behind Lee are Joy Kim of Pinole, Calif., and Olivia Chang of San Lorenzo, Calif., each having recorded a 2-over-par 73.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA, the largest Association of its kind, has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and 25 foreign countries.
