FOGLER, BALL TAKE EARLY LEAD AT JUNIOR ALL-STAR AT PETERSBURG
Newbury, Luo and Dimarco set pace at the Country Club of Petersburg

PETERSBURG, Va. — The threat of 100-degree weather was no match for the field at the Country Club of Petersburg. After a shotgun start, Ben Fogler of Elgin, S.C., and Adam Ball of Richmond, Va., each carded 2-under-par 70s to co-lead the Boys Division by one stroke after Tuesday's opening round of play at the Junior All-Star at Petersburg. In the Girls Division, Victoria Newbury of Williamsburg, Va., Linda Luo of Richmond, British Columbia, and Gabriella Dimarco of West Chester, Pa., each shot 2-over-par 74s to lead the pack.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Junior All-Star at Petersburg is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at the Country Club of Petersburg. The 95-player field features juniors from 23 states and Canada. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 Country Club of Petersburg at 6,786 yards, while the Girls Division is playing the course at 6,004 yards.

Both Ball and Fogler faced slow starts, but they were able to gain control by the end of the round.

“I started off bogeying and then finished the round with four birdies,” Ball said.

“I had four bogeys in the first seven holes, so I was 3-over-par through seven but then I eagled No. 11 and it was all better from there,” Fogler said.

Only one stroke off the lead and tied for third place are Alex Ehlert of Raleigh, N.C., Daniel Berger of Jupiter, Fla., Grayson Murray also of Raleigh, and Andrew Hans of Birmingham, Ala. Each carded 1-under-par 71s.

In the Girls Division, both Newbury and Dimarco's short games kept them in the lead.

“My putting really saved me,” Dimarco said. “I only hit a few greens, but I putted really well.”

“I birdied two of my last three holes,” Newbury said. “And one of my putts was a 30-foot putt.”

Linda Luo drove the ball well during her round and hopes that her driving continues to improve.

“I hit all but three fairways, but I want to work on my swing,” Luo said. “I kind of missed the greens today so I want to do better tomorrow.”
