MINA SHOOTS 4-UNDER-PAR TO LEAD GOLF WORLD WEST COAST CHAMPIONSHIP
Stelzmiller steady and leading at Castlewood Country Club

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Eric Mina of Fremont, Calif., shot a 4-under-par 66 Tuesday to enter the second round with a four-stroke lead. Chelsea Stelzmiller of Placerville, Calif., is mounted atop the leaderboard in the Girls Division after an even-par round of 71.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Golf World West Coast Championship is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at Castlewood Country Club. The 99-player field features juniors from eight states. The course is being played at 6,212 yards in the Boys Division and 5,718 yards in the Girls Division.

Mina, who has signed to play for UC Berkeley in the fall, played very well around the green in the first round. He recorded two chip-ins and needed only 23 putts on the day. Two of those putts went in for back-to-back birdies on Nos. 10 and 11.

“The golf course was set up really nice today,” Mina said. “The greens were rolling well, quick but very smooth.”

Spencer Fletcher of Los Altos, Calif., and Jace Merlo of Fresno, Calif., recorded even-par 70s on the first day to sit in second place. Tied for fourth place are John Catlin of Carmichael, Calif., Paul McNamara III of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., Cory Siegfried of Wayne, Pa., Chun-Ji Kim of Chandler, Ariz., and Kyle Souza of Livermore, Calif.

In the Girls Division, Stelzmiller started well, hitting eight of nine greens on the front nine and recording two birdies. But she said she was disappointed over missing two short putts later in the round and will work on that for Wednesday.

“These greens are fast, and you have to know where to place your shots,” Stelzmiller said. “I'm not going to be overconfident. Anything can happen tomorrow.”

Mina Harigae, of Monterey, Calif., is perched one shot back after shooting a 1-over-par 72. Alexandra Groetsema, of Palo Alto, Calif., is in third place at 2-over-par 73.
