SU CAPTURES BOYS DIVISION TITLE AT LESSING'S AJGA CLASSIC
Shon wins by two strokes at The Woodmere Club
WOODMERE, N.Y., - Dong Su of Richmond, British Columbia won the Boys Division at the Lessing's AJGA Classic by firing a 5-under-par 135 tournament total. Kelly Shon of Port Washington, N.Y., won in the Girls Division with a 1-over-par 141 tournament total.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Lessing's AJGA Classic was a 36-hole stroke play event held at The Woodmere Club. The 98-player field featured players from 22 states and 3 countries. The par-70 course played at 6,269 yards for the Boys Division and 5,725 yards for the Girls Division.
Su said he used his driver to hoist him atop the leaderboard this week. Hitting the green from the tee on the par-4 No. 7, Su eagled the hole and used that momentum to win the tournament.
“I just came out to play the best I can,” Su said. “I hit my driver pretty good and played pretty solid, so it worked out.”
Su birdied Nos. 2, 3, 5, and eagled No. 7 for a 3-under-par 32 on the front nine. He then drove the green again on No. 10 en route to birdie for a back nine score of 1-over-par 36 and a 2-under-par 68 on the day.
Michael Kania of Haverford, Pa., finished in second place with a 4-under-par 136 tournament total. Minghao Wang of Reunion, Fla., placed third carding a 1-under-par 139 tournament total, while Cameron Wilson of Rowayton, Conn., finished fourth posting an even-par 140. Tied for fifth recording 2-over-par 142 tournament totals were Brendan Doyle of Beverly Hills, Calif., and Juan Pablo Hernandez of Mexico City.
In the Girls Division, Shon said after changing putters last week, she must have made the right decision.
“I haven't had two days of 28 putts in a long time,” Shon said.
With birdies on Nos. 7, 8, 10, and 17, Shon said she was consistently playing well, finishing with an even-par 70 final-round total.
Brittany Altomare of Shrewsbury, Mass., finished in second posting a 3-over-par 143 for the week. Marina Alex of Wayne, N.J., recorded a 7-over-par 147 two-day total to finish third.
