Three-way tie for first in Girls Division

REHOBOTH, Mass., - After the first round of the AJGA Rhode Island Classic Brandon Dalinka of Newtown, Pa., sits atop the leaderboard firing a 2-under-par 69. Tied for the lead in the Girls Division are Stani Schiavone of Bangor, Pa., Alexandra Lipa of Birmingham, Mich., and Samantha Morrell of North Kingstown, R.I., all posting 3-over-par 74s.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Rhode Island Classic is a 54-hole stroke play event held at Crestwood Country Club. The 99-player field features players from 21 states and Ontario. The par-71 course is being played at 6,447 yards for the Boys Division and 5,898 yards for the Girls Division.

In the Boys Division, Dalinka said he thought putting was the best part of his game and a nice putt for bogey on No. 10 saved his round.

“I got it rolling today and kept it going,” Dalinka said.

Dalinka birdied Nos. 2, 4, 7, 12 and 18 for a 2-under-par 33 on the front nine and an even-par 36 on the back nine.

Antonio Grillo of Vineyard Haven, Mass., Taylor Szyndlar of Jupiter, Fla., Jeff Quinn of Anthem, Ariz., Wilson Bowen of Winnetka, Ill., and Mark Pollak of San Antonio are all tied for second posting 1-under-par 71s.

In the Girls Division, Schiavone said she used course management to set her in the lead.

“If I hit a bad shot,” Schiavone said. “I hit it in a spot where I could get out.”

Tied for first with Schiavone, Morrell said she feels pretty confident going into the second round.

“I finished my round in style by birdieing No. 18, where I also had an audience,” Morrell said. Lipa said it feels good to be in the lead, but knows she has two more days left in the tournament.

“I just want to stay calm, I know I have it in me,” Lipa said. “I have to believe in myself and keep at it.”
