FOUR-WAY TIE ATOP LEADERBOARD LEAVES BOYS DIVISION WIDE OPEN
Ormson leads Girls Division at Lockton/Capitol Federal Kansas City Junior

SHAWNEE MISSION, Kan. — Gary Quinn of Anthem, Ariz., Kevin Kring of Springfield, Mo., Ty Spinella of Aledo, Texas, and Patrick Deichert of Dallas, all carded 1-over-par 71s to lead the Boys Division of the Lockton/Capitol Federal Kansas City Junior at Indian Hills Country Club. Anne Ormson of Granger, Ind., leads the Girls Division after carding a 2-over-par 72 Tuesday.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Lockton/Capitol Federal Kansas City Junior is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at Indian Hills Country Club. The tournament field consists of 75 boys and 24 girls from 20 states. The Boys Division is playing the course at 6,518 yards, while the Girls Division is playing at 5,971yards.

Quinn started off strong, recording a birdie on No.1 and then stringing together six consecutive pars. Quinn struggled through the middle of his round, but answered by making birdie on two of the last four holes. Quinn said he was really strong off the tee and believes that was the key to his round.

“It's very important to hit the fairways. It sets you up really well to hit the greens,” Quinn said. “That's the key to this course, hopefully I'm going to do that again tomorrow. I just want to make some more putts and post a low number.”

Kring said he wasn't striking the ball very well for most of his round, but was still able to hit every green on the front nine in regulation. Kring went bogey-free on the front nine, and birdied Nos. 4 and 9. Kring started to struggle after making the turn, but was able to avoid making any large numbers. Kring said he felt better about his game towards the end and was able to birdie No. 18 and hopes to carry that into tomorrow.

“I started hitting the ball better the last few holes because I forgot about what I was doing wrong,” Kring said. “My goal today was to go bogey-free and I lasted until No. 11. I'm just going to keep that goal for tomorrow.”

Austin Graham of San Clemente, Calif., Tyler Rice of Duncan Okla., Zach Sanders of Shawnee Mission, Kan., Nicholas Sheppard of Springfield, Mo., and Brian Dorfman of Greenwood Village, Colo., are all tied for fifth after posting 2-over-par 72s.

In the Girls Division, Ormson tallied three birdies on the back nine, including two of the last three holes. She also was able to hole-out from a greenside bunker on No. 11. Ormson only putted 27 times and has learned the importance of keeping the ball below the hole due to the quickness of the downhill putts. Ormson said she was excited about her round and hopes to use her momentum to carry her through the rest of the tournament.

“I feel really great,” Ormson said. “I've never had the lead in an AJGA event. I had a great round with a couple of chip-ins on the back nine and my putter was really working for me. I'm excited.”

Victoria Fallgren of Lakewood, Calif., and Emma Lavy, Fayetteville, Ark., are tied for second, after carding 5-over-par 75s.
