MYERS AND MARKS SHARE MEDALIST HONORS AT SRIXON QUALIFIER
Kwon earns medalist honors in Girls Division at Meadowbrook Golf & Country Cub

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. — Derek Myers of Edmond, Okla., and Ryan Marks of Warrensburg, Mo., tied for medalist honors with 3-under-par 69 in the Boys Division at the Lockton/Capitol Federal Kansas City Junior Srixon Qualifier Sunday at Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club. Lynda Kwon of North Wales, Pa., took home medalist honors in the Girls Division with 6-over-par 77. Myers, Marks and Kwon all earned their first Srixon Qualifier Series medalist honors.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Lockton/Capitol Federal Kansas City Junior Srixon Qualifier was an 18-hole shotgun held at the Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club. The tournament field consisted of 88 players, 73 boys and 15 girls, from 17 states. The Boys Division played the course at 6,514 yards and the Girls Division played at 5,962 yards.

Myers felt confident all day and played solid throughout the round. Myers, who started off No. 9, consistently hit fairways and greens to make pars, until he had a chip in for birdie on No. 18. From there, Myers went on to sink a 35-foot birdie putt on No. 2, which gave him momentum to keep going.

“I was confident after the birdie putt on No. 2, but even more confident after I punched the ball through the trees to get on the green to save par on No.3,” Myers said. “It just came naturally today and I hope it does again for the tournament.”

Marks played steady golf hitting fairways and greens and recorded 1-under-par 34 through his first nine holes. He then went on to birdie two of the three par-5 holes. After carding a birdie on No. 1 he was confident knowing he was 2-under-par.

“It feels good to qualify,” Marks said. “I am excited for the tournament and I hope to shoot well again on what I've been told can be a difficult course, so I plan to hit straight.”

Tyler Kato of Seattle, Riley Piles of Topeka, Kan., and Ben Lowman of Manhattan, Kan., tied for third after carding 1-under-par 70s.

Other qualifiers in the Boys Division are Alex Carney of Wichita, Kan., William Cunningham of Corinth, Texas, Andrew Chael of Lenexa, Kan., Alex Hofmann of Overland Park, Kan., Ross Snodgrass of Wichita, Kan., Brian Steele of Springfield, Mo., Thomas Wuennenberg of St. Louis, Chun-Ji Kim of Chandler, Ariz., A.J. Gebert of Wichita, Kan., and Colton Knedler of Honolulu.

Piles and Lowman opted to take one AJGA tournament exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event.

In the Girls Division, Kwon is happy to have qualified, knowing her game wasn't strong all day; Kwon did have what she called a “perfect driver.” Kwon didn't always have her putter working, but was happy to card a birdie on the No. 10 par 5.

“I booked everything a few days ago when I knew I could play in the qualifier,” Kwon said. “Qualifying for the tournament was definitely worth the trip. For the tournament I plan on having the same approach to my game, only play better.”

Jacqueline Bardgett of Chesterfield, Mo., and Gianna Misenhelter of Overland Park, Kan., tied for second, carding 7-over-par 78s.

Other qualifiers in the Girls Division are Mary Larsh of Edmond, Okla., and Meagan Bewley.of Davenport, Iowa.
