KORTE SHOOTS PERSONAL-BEST 66 TO TAKE WIN AT SRIXON QUALIFIER
Cheung, Winnett share medalist honors in Girls Division

OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. — Dustin Korte of Metropolis, Ill., fired a 6-under-par 66 Sunday to take medalist honors in the Boys Division of the Srixon Qualifier for the David Gossett Junior Championship presented by Stanford Financial Group. In the Girls Division, Tiffany Cheung of Bradenton, Fla., and Molly Winnett of Gardendale, Ala., both shot 3-over-par 75s to tie for the lead and share medalist honors.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Srixon Qualifier for the David Gossett Junior Championship presented by Stanford Financial Group was an 18-hole stroke play event held at The Plantation Golf Club. The field featured players from 18 states, Belgium and Canada. The par-72 course was played at 6,603 yards in the Boys Division and 5,910 yards in the Girls Division.

Korte, who shot 32-34 on the front and back nines, respectively, carded six birdies on the day to take the win in his first AJGA event. He said good approach shots allowed him to make birdies but noted that he had to make adjustments when it came to his drives.

“I got in trouble with my drives so I had to use my hybrid off the tee,” Korte said. “Luckily the course played to that and I didn't have to hit my driver a lot.”

Korte decided to take a Performance Based Entry Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event.

Behind Korte in second place was Drew Frisby of Memphis, Tenn., who shot a 4-under-par 68. In a tie for fourth place, both carding 3-under-par 69s, were Blake Meyrowitz of Alpharetta, Ga., and Bobby Short of Nashville, Tenn. Travis Scarbrough of Marietta, Ga., fired a 2-under-par 70 for sixth place while Bryan Boaz of Tulsa, Okla., shot 1-under-par 71 to claim seventh place. Seven players tied for eighth place, all shooting even-par 72s. They were Werlien Prosperie III of Houma, La., Luke Daily of Paducah, Ky., Robert Burrow of Charlotte, N.C., Christopher Gordon of Cohutta, Ga., Zachary Choate of Mayfield, Ky., Matt Bernstein of Alpharetta, Ga., and Blake Kelley of Mandeville, La.

Patrick Willey of Conway, Ark., claimed the last qualifying position after winning a sudden-death playoff on No. 10 with an eagle.

Also qualifying but choosing to take Tournament Exemptions were Will Pearson of Memphis, Tenn., and Alex Silchuk of

Franklin, Ky.

With a win in the Girls Division, Cheung and Winnett both took home their first AJGA medalist honors. Both players attributed their rounds to solid putting.

“I hit a lot of greens, 12 total, and that motivated me and helped me get confidence,” Cheung said. “I was able to putt better because of that.”

Cheung, who will be playing in the tournament this week, shot 38-37 on the front and back nines, respectively, en route to her co-medalist honors.

Like Korte, Winnett also opted to take a Tournament Exemption this week, and said she would save it for a later tournament in Georgia.

“I practiced putting for an hour before the round which allowed me to see the breaks better and gain confidence,” Winnett said.

In third place for the Girls Division was Brienna Heinzler of Palm Harbor, Fla., with a 5-over-par 77. Ana Garcia carded a 6-over-par 78 to claim fourth place. Elizabeth Wells claimed the final qualifying spot to round out the tournament field.
