McCARTHY VICTORIOUS AT FIDELITY INVESTMENTS JUNIOR CLASSIC
Jo outlasts competition for win in Girls Division

MARBLEHEAD, Mass.- Thomas McCarthy of Tolland, Conn., won the Boys Division at Tedesco Country Club firing a 5-over-par 215 tournament total. Eunae Jo of Ridgewood, N.J., took home the trophy in the Girls Division by posting a 74-80-76 — 230 tournament total.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Fidelity Investments Junior Classic was a 54-hole stroke play event held at Tedesco Country Club. The 89-player field featured players from 16 states and British Columbia. The par-70 course played at 6,433 yards for the Boys Division and 5,796 for the Girls Division.

McCarthy, who was in the lead throughout the first and second rounds, said his strategy for the final round was to play the same and hit the ball well.

“I scrambled well and recovered from bad shots,” McCarthy said. “I was falling apart halfway through the round but somehow finished on top.”

Making birdies on Nos. 4 and 18, McCarthy finished with an even-par 34 on the front nine and a 3-over-par 39 on the back nine, giving him a 3-over-par 73 on the day. This was his first AJGA win.

Michael Kania of Haverford, Pa., and Mark Pollak of San Antonio tied for second place carding 6-over-par 216 tournament totals. David Zhang of South Glastonbury, Conn., Bernard D'Amato of Weston, Conn., Benjamin Cohen of Pittsburgh and Gene Yang of East Brunswick, N.J., all tied for fourth posting 9-over-par 219 tournament totals.

Playing in her first AJGA tournament, Jo parred No. 1 in a sudden-death playoff with Kaitlin Drolson of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., to seal the win.

“My chip in the playoff was crucial and I really had to focus,” Jo said. “I knew I was under pressure and had to make putts because someone was tied with me.”

Jo kept her round consistent by recording seven pars on the front nine for a 2-over-par 36 and five pars on the back nine, posting a 4-over-par 40 for a 6-over-par 76 on the day.

Drolson finished in second place with a 230 tournament total. Isabel Han of Lake Mary, Fla., came in third place shooting a 231 tournament total.
