CHENG MEDALS AT FIDELITY INVESTMENTS JUNIOR CLASSIC CARDING 3-UNDER-PAR 69
Lee medals in Girls Division with 3-over-par 75

STOW, Mass. -Michael Cheng of Woodbury, N.Y., carded a 3-under-par 69 to medal in the Boys Division of the Fidelity Investments Junior Classic Srixon Qualifier Sunday. Harin Lee of Bayside, N.Y., recorded a 3-over-par 75 to medal in the Girls Division.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Fidelity Investments Junior Classic Srixon Qualifier was an 18-hole stroke play event held at Stow Acres Country Club — South Course. The 100-player field featured players from 12 states and Mexico. The course was played at 6,440 yards for the Boys Division and 5,785 yards for the Girls Division.

Cheng said he used his strong putting to save pars and make birdies.

“My two birdies in a row kept me motivated,” Cheng said. “It helped me to keep going.”

With birdies on Nos. 5, 8, 12, 13 and 18 Cheng finished with a 1-under-par 35 on the front nine and a 2-under-par 34 on the back nine.

Ten additional boys qualified for the tournament. Jeff Hatten of Farmington, Conn., fired a 2-under-par 70. Joshua Briere of Newport, Vt., and Adam Vaccari of Winsted, Conn., posted even-par 72s. Parker Bova of Avon, Conn., and Spencer Bova of Avon, Conn., recorded 1-over-par 73s. Bryan Otis of Yarmouth, Maine, and Michael McCarthy of Tolland, Conn., finished with 2-over-par 74s. Qualifying after a sudden-death playoff were Manny Tulumaris of Burlington, Conn., Robert Jorgensen of New Hartford, N.Y., and Doug Kleeschulte of Kingston, N.Y., carding 3-over-par 75s.

Qualifying but opting to take a Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event were Nick Harris of Marlborough, Mass., posting an even-par 72, Kyle Sargis of Lexington, Mass., shooting a 1-over-par 73 and Brendan Meagher of Weston, Mass., recording a 2-over-par 74.

In the Girls Division, Lee said her chip in on No. 3 for birdie helped her feel confident about her round.

“My parents were cheering really loud for me,” Lee said. “That gets me excited for the next hole.”

Also qualifying for the tournament were Brooke Stepanek of Guilford, Conn., posting a 5-over-par 77, Eunae Jo of Ridgewood, N.J., carding a 6-over-par 78 and Alice Choi of Whitestone, N.Y., recording an 8-over-par 80.
