HOOBERY LEADS AT 5-UNDER-PAR AFTER FIRST ROUND OF JUNIOR ALL-STAR AT MARSHALLIA RANCH
Joo leads Girls Division by one stroke at Marshallia Ranch Golf Club

VANDENBERG AFB, Calif. —  After a chilly day near the Calfornia coast, Macgregor Hoobery of Santa Maria, Calif. leads after the first round of the Junior All-Star at Marshallia Ranch with a 5-under-par 67. In the Girls Division, Katia Joo of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., shot 1-over-par 73 and is in sole posession of the lead.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Assocation, the Junior All-Star at Marshallia Ranch is a 54-hole stroke play event featuring 89 boys and 28 girls, ranging in age from 12-15. Thirteen states and one foreign country are represented with 84 players from California. The event is being staged on the par-72 Marshallia Ranch Golf Course with boys tees set at 6,536 yards and girls tees set at 5,651 yards.

Hoobery said he felt that his putting was the strongest part of Tuesday's round but hitting 16 greens helped. Hoobery knocked down five birdies on his way to a 5-under-par 67 and has a one-stroke lead going into Wednesday's second round.

“My game plan tomorrow is to go as low as I can,” Hoobery said. “I just need to keep my head on straight and not let my nerves get to me.”

Rounding out the top five are John Young Kim of Cypress, Calif., carding 4-under-par 68 for the second position. Tied for third are Nicholas Austin from Midlothian, Va., YiKeun Chang of Walnut, Calif., and Tucker Wadkins of Dallas, Texas at 3-under-par 69.

In the Girls Division, Joo carded even-par 72 in Tuesday's round and says she is happy with her score for the day, especially because this is her fourth event with the AJGA. Joo fired four birdies on the round, including a chip-in on No. 9.

“My iron shots were really strong today,” Joo said. “If I keep that constancy for tomorrow and am able to brush off my mistakes during the next round, I will have a chance to stay at the top.”

In the Girls Division, tied for third are Beverly Vatananugulkit of Cerritos, Calif., and Chessy Thomas of Spokane, Wash., at 1-over-par 73.
