MEDICUS PRESEASON JUNIOR AT ALBUQUERQUE
University of New Mexico Championship Course
Albuquerque, N.M. • May 11 - 13

FRIBBS CAPTURES MEDALIST HONORS AT 4-UNDER-PAR
Lowe and Vertz tie for second

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Derek Fribbs of Castle Rock, Colo., recorded a final-round 2-over-par 74 to finish with a tournament total of 4-under-par 140 Sunday, taking medalist honors at the Medicus Preseason Junior at Albuquerque.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Medicus Preseason Junior at Albuquerque was a 36-hole stroke play event held at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course. The 84-player field featured players from 20 states and Canada. The course was played at 6,881 yards.

After a very strong first round that gave him a five-stroke lead, Fribbs had one thought going into Sunday's final round; “Stay around par.”

Fribbs began with a steady front nine, carding six pars, two bogeys and one birdie, to make the turn at 1-over-par 37. He made par on No. 10, then rattled off two birdies on the next three holes to make things a little less stressful for the finish.

“Coming down No. 18 was the best,” Fribbs said. “When I knew I was three ahead of David (Lowe) and we both put our shots on the green. That's when I knew I won,”

David Lowe of Paradise Valley, Ariz., and Ben Vertz of Coral Springs, Fla., tied for second with tournament totals of 2-under-par 142. Armando Villarreal of Tucson, Ariz., fired a 4-under-par 68 Sunday to take sole possession of fourth place at 1-under-par 143. Payne Wilkie of Austin, Texas, finished the tournament at even-par 144 to finish in fifth.
