PITCAITHLEY CARDS 3-UNDER-PAR 69 FOR FIRST ROUND LEAD

Park leads field by one at CORE Realty Holdings Junior Classic

DIABLO GRANDE, Calif.Eric Pitcaithley of Pleasanton, Calif., fired a 3-under-par 69 to claim the lead after first-round action at the CORE Realty Holdings Junior Classic. In the Girls Division, Victoria Sungmin Park of Irvine, Calif., carded a 1-under-par 70 to claim a one-stroke lead on the field.

The CORE Realty Holdings Junior Classic, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at Diablo Grande Golf Resort’s Ranch Course. The course will play par 72 in the Boys Division and par 71 in the Girls Division. The field includes 143 players from 13 states and Canada, with 119 from the host state of California.

Pitcaithley went into first-round play looking only for a solid round that would give him a chance to contend. A consistent round of 3-under-par 69 is exactly what he got and he now sits atop the leaderboard. Carding a 2-under-par 34 on the front nine with birdies on hole Nos. 4 and 9, he moved to the back nine with a boost of confidence and a hot putter which helped him shave off another stoke to end the day at 3-under-par.

“My putting helped me out a lot today,” Pitcaithley said. “I was able to drop a lot of long par putts, keeping me away from big numbers. Hopefully I can keep it going tomorrow and into the final round.”

Tied for second after firing 1-under-par 71 are Sam Smith of Turlock, Calif., Taylor Travis of Fremont, Calif., and Andrew Perez of Oxnard, Calif.  Tied for fifth with rounds of even-par 72 are Michael Gideon of Lancaster, Calif., Jake Sarnoff of Manhattan Beach, Calif., Alexander Schmitt of Tiburon, Calif., Kevin Lim of Stevenson Ranch, Calif., and Joseph Harrison of Boulder City, Nev.

Park, who came into the day with a goal of shooting under par, finished her day feeling good after a round of 1-under-par 70. She got off to a hot start, recording a birdie on No. 1. Park went on to finish the front nine with a 3-under-par 33, before finding trouble on the back nine. She was able to fight through the 2-over-par 37 and still record a tournament-leading, 1-under-par performance for the day.

“It is both scary and exciting to be leading,” Park said. “All I wanted to do was shoot low and now that I have, hopefully I can do it again.”

In second with a round of even-par 71 is Eunice Yim of La Canada, Calif., while tied for third at 1-over-par 72 are Jane Rah of Torrance, Calif., and Nara Kim of Diamond Bar, Calif.
