FIELDS DOMINATES BOYS DIVISION TO TAKE TOP HONORS

Harter cashes in on first victory of the summer

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – Jack Fields of Southern Pines, N.C., held off the competition to claim bragging rights at the Golf Pride Junior Classic, winning the Boys Division by three strokes. Courtney Harter of Clearwater, Fla., finished strong to win the Girls Division at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club and her second American Junior Golf Association tournament victory.

The Golf Pride Junior Classic, hosted by the AJGA, was a 54-hole stroke play event held at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club, home of the 2001 and 2007 U.S. Women’s Open. The field included 99 players, ages 12-18, from 20 states, Australia and Peru.

Carding five birdies and 10 pars in the final round to go 12 under–par for the tournament, Fields led the field all days of play. Coming into final-round play, Fields said his main goal was to start out strong.

“I wanted to keep making birdies and put pressure on the others,” Fields said. “If I made lots of birdies, then the others would have to make even more to keep up.”

Claiming his second victory this summer after winning the Bridgestone Golf Junior Classic in April, Fields said the win at Southern Pines was even more special.

“It feels really good,” Fields said. “This is a good venue to win at, and I’m proud to have won here.”

David Dannelly of Easley, S.C., finished in second place with a 9-under-par 204. Alone in third place was Josh Brock of Wilmington, N.C., carding a 7-under-par 206. Tied for fourth were Russell Henley of Macon, Ga., and Doug Kenny of Roswell, Ga., both with scores of 5-under-par 208s.

Getting up and down on the last hole to win the Girls Division by one stoke, Harter finished the day with two birdies and said coming into the final round, the win could have gone to anyone.

“I came in with a four stroke lead, but anything could have happened,” Harter said. “I wanted to play my own game and take one shot at a time.”

Harter said the win at Pine Needles was also a huge honor knowing that TOUR players play here and hopes to return in the near future.

“This course is so nice,” Harter said. “I really hope to play here next year at the U.S. Women’s Open.”

Hannah Yun of Bradenton, Fla., and Christine Shimel of Kennett Square, Pa., tied for second place with scores of 4-over-par 217 to round out the Girls Division.
