JACOBS FIRES OPENING-ROUND 68 TO LEAD AT TRUE TEMPER/DAVID GOSSETT JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
Lindenschmidt shoots 1-over-par 72 to take three-shot lead in Girls Division

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Mason Jacobs of Metropolis, Ill., fired an opening-round, 3-under-par 68 to grab the first-round lead at the True Temper/David Gossett Junior Championship on Tuesday. In the Girls Division, Kelsey Lindenschmidt of West Chester, Ohio, shot a first-round 72 to take the lead by three shots.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the True Temper/David Gossett Junior Championship is being held at TPC Southwind. The par-71 course is set up at 6,829 yards for the Boys Division and 5,926 yards for the Girls Division. The tournament field consists of 63 boys and 21 girls, ages 12-18, representing 19 states and British Columbia, including 19 Tennessee residents.

Jacobs played well from the beginning, birdying his first hole of the day, the par-4 10th. Jacobs, who is playing in only his third AJGA event, recorded six pars before carding his next birdie on the 17th hole. Jacobs shot a 2-under-par 33 on the back nine and added a 1-under-par 35 on the front nine for an 18-hole total of 68. Jacobs said that while he was happy to shoot a low score on the first day, he recognizes that there are still 36 holes left to play.

“It always feels good to get off to a good start,” Jacobs said. “I know there are still two days left in the tournament, so I just want to come out tomorrow and do the same thing that I did today.”

Rob Campbell of Nashville, Tenn., shot a 2-under-par 69 to finish the first round in second place, one shot off the lead. Christian Heavens of Fairview Heights, Ill., is currently in third place after shooting a 2-under-par 33 on the back nine en route to an 18-hole total of 1-under-par 70. Scott Langley of Ballwin, Mo., and Kyle Peterman of Sherman, Ill., shot even-par 71 and are currently tied for fourth.

Lindenschmidt, whose highest career finish in an AJGA event is fourth at the 2005 AJGA Andover Open in Lexington, Ky., recorded eight pars on the front nine, finishing with a front-nine score of 37. On the back nine, Lindenschmidt added birdies on holes 11 and 17 to shoot even par. Lindenschmidt, who hit 13 greens on the day, said that her play was solid all-around.

“I was able to keep my drives in the fairway, and I hit some good iron shots,” Lindenschmidt said. “I also did not have any three-putts, so I putted the ball well.”

Three girls are currently tied for second place. Calle Nielson of Nashville, Courtney Figueroa of Naples, Fla., and Jade Bollinger of Wellington, Fla., each shot 4-over-par 75 in the first round and are three shots off the pace set by Lindenschmidt.
