SCHERER, LOVETT-WOODSUM IN TWO-WAY TIE FOR THE LEAD GOING INTO FINAL ROUND
Detlefsen leads Girls Division by 3 strokes at Fidelity Investments Junior Classic
BOLTON, Mass.-Brian Scherer of Midland, Texas, and Chase Lovett-Woodsum of Boston, are in a two-way tie for first by one stroke after Wednesday's first and second rounds of the Fidelity Investments Junior Classic. Katie Detlefsen of Eagan, Minn., leads the Girls Division by three strokes with a tournament total 72-72—144.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Fidelity Investments Junior Classic is a 54-hole stroke-play competition featuring 87 boys and girls from 19 states. The International-Pines Course, known as “the world's longest golf course” at 8,325 yards, is hosting its second AJGA event. The par-72 course will play at 6,919 for the Boys Division and the Girls Division will play at 5,949 yards.
In the Boys Division, Scherer only had one bogey in the second round to card a 3-under-par 69 and finish strong for the day at a tournament total 141.
“My ball-striking was the strongest. I hit all 18 greens and 12 fairways in regulation,” Scherer said, who finished with 4 birdies on the day. “I kept it consistent and only had to make a few putts.”
Lovett-Woodsum, who is making his first appearance in the Fidelity Investments Junior Classic, started off slow, but jump-started his game on No. 9.
“In the second round, I started off slow, but I turned it on at No. 9 and started to play well,” Lovett-Woodsum said, who had eight birdies on the day.
“I putted well and I made a bunch of long par putts,” Lovett-Woodsum said. “I was hitting it straight off the tee.”
Alex Moon of Dallas is in third with a tournament total 142, while Ryan Sirman of Tyler, Texas, and Taylor Fontaine of Southbridge, Mass., are tied for fourth with tournament total 145s.
In the Girls Division, Detlefsen focused on her approach shots to card a second-round even-par 72 and claim the lead.
“I did a lot of things right the second round,” Detlefsen said. “There are big greens here and you have to be in the right position. I gave myself a lot of chances.”
Detlefsen, who will play for University of Central Florida next fall, hit 13 fairways and 16 greens in regulation, which helped her to keep a positive outlook despite the back-to-back 18 holes.
“My goal was to keep a good attitude, trust my swing, and not think about the score.” Detlefsen said “When playing 36 holes, you have to fight though it.”
In second in the Girls Division is Brittany Altomare of Shrewsbury, Mass., with a 147 tournament total, while Mia Kabasakalis of Alameda, Calif., is in third.
The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA, the largest Association of its kind, has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 50 states and 30 foreign countries.
AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. More than 160 former AJGA juniors currently play on the PGA and LPGA Tours and have compiled more than 300 wins. AJGA alumni include Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Davis Love III, Mike Weir, Charles Howell III, Jim Furyk, Grace Park, Cristie Kerr, Candie Kung and Paula Creamer.
