GOODSPEED SHOOTS EVEN-PAR 71 TO LEAD AFTER ROUND ONE AT THE VALERO TEXAS OPEN JUNIOR SHOOTOUT

Itria fires first-round 73 to lead Girls Division by one stroke

SAN ANTONIO – Guy Goodspeed of Del Rio, Texas used a quick start on the front nine to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Valero Texas Open Junior Shootout on Tuesday. Alli Itria of Lubbock, Texas, shot a 2-over-par 73 to take a one-shot lead in the Girls Division.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Valero Texas Open Junior Shootout is being held at Oak Hills Country Club. The par-71 course was set up at 6,693 yards for the Boys Division and 5,900 yards for the Girls Division. The tournament field consists of 90 boys and 30 girls, ages 12-18, from 10 states, and includes 94 Texas residents.

Goodspeed, who finished tied for seventh at the Dodge/Bob Estes Abilene Junior July 4-7, birdied three of the first five holes he played, recording birdies on hole Nos. 1, 2 and 5. Goodspeed shot a 3-under-par 32 on the front nine, and a 3-over-par 39 on the back nine, for a first-round 71. Goodspeed said he hopes to repeat the success he had last week in Abilene.

“It feels great to be leading,” Goodspeed said. “It feels like Abilene when I was leading after the second round. I just want to go out and take care of business tomorrow.”

Matt Smith of Austin, Texas, Travis Woolf of Fort Worth, Texas, and Stephen Carney of Tulsa, Okla., shot 1-over-par 72 and are currently tied for second place, one shot off the leader. Will Griffin of San Antonio, Daniel Wood of Leander, Texas, and Jacob Simon of Oklahoma City, Okla., finished the first round at 2-over-par 73 and are tied for third place.

In the Girls Division, Itria carded birdies on hole Nos. 2 and 8 to shoot a 1-over-par 36 on the front nine. On the back nine, Itria continued her steady play carding birdies on three holes, including consecutive birdies on the 13th and 14th holes. Itria fired a 1-over-par 37 on the back nine for a first-round score of 2-over-par 73. Itria said she was happy to be in the lead after the first round.

“It’s exciting, because I’ve never been in the lead at an AJGA tournament before,” Itria said. “Tomorrow I just need to play my game, and hopefully I’ll stay in the lead.”

Lisa McCloskey of Montgomery, Texas, stands in second after one round of play after shooting a 3-over-par 74. Lee Lopez of Whittier, Calif., shot a 5-over-par 76 and is currently in third place, three shots off the pace set by Itria.
