SPOONER, FRASIER SIT ATOP LEADERBOARD WITH 3-UNDER-PAR 69s
Round one leaders hit 16 greens to finish with two stroke lead

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. β€” Kevin Spooner of West Vancouver, B.C., shot a 3-under-par 69 to take the Boys Division lead after the first round of the Pacific Northwest International Junior Presented by Jeff Troesch. Danielle Kang of Oak Park, Calif., matched Spooner with her own 69 to take the lead in the Girls Division.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Pacific Northwest International Junior presented by Jeff Troesch is being played at the par-72 Trophy Lake Golf & Casting. Competing in the 54-hole event are 63 boys and 21 girls ages 12-18, from seven states and Canada, including 31 players from California and 29 from Washington.

Spooner, who splits his time between hockey and golf during the year, played target practice with the greens, hitting 16 of 18. A hot putter gave him seven birdies and a two-stroke lead heading into the second round.

β€œMy confidence came from my putter,” Spooner said. β€œTo shoot 3-under, I'm pretty happy.”

Spooner said he isn't letting the lead get to his head, but a win is certainly invited.

β€œThe AJGA has great tournaments, if you win one of these, it's a great accomplishment,” Spooner said.

In the Boys Division, Sean Jarvis of Vancouver, B.C., Zachary Baker of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Thomas Petts of North Vancouver, B.C., carded matching 71s to tie for second place. Sitting in fifth place after the first round with even-par 72s are Jens Bracht of Lake Forest Park, Wash., and Amit Odaiyar of Lodi, Calif.

Kang, like Spooner, hit 16 greens en route to her 3-under-par 69. Kang is optimistic about her simple gameplan.

β€œI pick targets and go for it,” she said.

Four birdies and 12 fairways set Kang on course to her two-stroke lead. To succeed in the tournament, Kang said she simply has to want to win.

β€œIf I have a good score, I try to keep consistent,” Kang said. β€œI want to try to win.”

In the Girls Division, Danielle Frasier of Encinitas, Calif., came in second place for the round with 35-36β€”71, while Katrina Hegge of Seattle, Wash., is currently in third place with 40-32β€”72.
