ALBERT LEADS MEDICUS PRESEASON JUNIOR AT RANCHO MIRAGE BY ONE STROKE Two players tied for second at 2-under-par 70
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif.- James Albert of San Bernardino, Calif., is leading the Medicus Preseason Junior at Rancho Mirage by one stroke after carding a first-round 69 at The Westin Mission Hills Resort Gary Player Signature Course in California.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Medicus Preseason Junior at Rancho Mirage is being held at The Westin Mission Hills Resort on the Gary Player Signature Course in Rancho Mirage, Calif. The par-72 course is set up at 6,883 yards. The tournament field consists of 84 boys representing 11states and Canada, including 61 from the state of California.
Albert started the day with seven pars, one birdie and a bogey to shoot a front-nine 36. As a 2009 graduate playing in his first AJGA event, Albert birdied three of his first four holes on the back nine, leading to a 3-under-par 33 and a first-round 69.
I felt like I played very well today, especially when I got to the back nine, said Albert. The greens were very pure, that's probably why I made some of the putts that I did.
Albert, who leads the field by one stroke, is being chased by Ramsey Sahyoun of Reseda, Calif., and Brandon Hagy of Westlake Village, Calif., at 2-under-par 70. Three boys are tied for fourth at 1-under-par 71, including Niall Platt of Santa Barbara, Calif., Mark Hicks of Bermuda Dunes, Calif., and David Marshall of St. Louis, Mo.
Sean Jarvis of Vancouver, British Columbia, joins five California boys in the six-way tie for seventh at 72 after the first 18 holes of the tournament. Those California players are Matthew Siporin of Tarzana, Blake Parker of Placentia, Thomas Moore of Huntington Beach, Gavin Foster of North Tustin and Connor Fehmel of Agoura Hills.
Final round tee times will be Sunday from 7 8:57 a.m. off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees at the Gary Player Signature Course.
