STAMP CAPTURES MEDALIST HONORS AT SRIXON QUALIFIER
13 qualify for Hiwan Junior presented by Stonecreek Funding
Evergreen, Colo. — Taylor Stamp of Colorado Springs, Colo., fired a 2-over-par 72 Monday to take medalist honors in the Boys Division at the Srixon Qualifier for the Hiwan Junior presented by Stonecreek Funding. In the Girls Division, Katelyn Stanier, of Newnan, Ga., was medalist with an 83, and received one of three playing opportunities in the girls field.
The 18-hole event, part of the Srixon Qualifier Series, was conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Hiwan Golf Club and featured 67 players from 14 states.
Stamp (33-39—72), 16, credited his low score to two chip-ins, which helped him make four birdies on the front side and two on the back nine. This qualifier was Stamp's first AJGA event.
“I felt pretty good today,” he said. “It definitely was a different course with lots of blind shots, which made it difficult to figure out the distances for those shots. Now I'm looking forward to playing in the actual tournament.”
Other tournament qualifiers in the Boys Division included Riley Pumphrey, of Georgetown, Texas; Eric Finley, of Centennial, Colo.; Tadd Fujikawa, of Honolulu; Karl Stasik, of Broomfield, Colo.; Mark Hubbard, of Denver; Abraham Lee, of La Canada, Calif.; Bryan Olshock, of Lakewood, Colo.; Gunner Wiebe, of Aurora, Colo.; and Brenden Beeg, of Littleton, Colo. Richard Ciombor of Anthem, Ariz. also qualified but opted to take an AJGA Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event.
Stanier (39-44—83), 16, played a steady round, which helped her qualify for her second AJGA event.
“I started off really well, but the back side was a little bit harder,” she said. “I wasn't looking for birdies, I was just taking pars if I could. I just wanted to play solid.”
Other qualifiers in the Girls Division include Sara Jones, of The Colony, Texas, at 84 and Ashley Tait, of Littleton, Colo., at 85.
The 36-hole event begins Wednesday with tees times beginning at 7 a.m. off the No. 1 tee at Hiwan Golf Club.
