SPRINGER AND BLIWAS SHARE MEDALIST HONORS AT MEMORIAL JUNIOR Michelle Park medals in Girls Division
DELAWARE, Ohio Alex Springer of Anthem, Ariz., and Adam Bliwas of Upper Arlington, Ohio, fired 2-under-par rounds of 69 to share medalist honors in the Boys Division at the Srixon Qualifier of the Memorial Junior Championship presented by Wendy's and Discover Card. Michelle Park of Los Angeles, tallied a 76 to medal in the Girls Division.
The Memorial Junior Championship presented by Wendy's and Discover Card Srixon Qualifier, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, featured 84 boys and 15 girls ages 12 to 18 competing for a total of 19 spots in this week's championship field. Dornoch Golf Club hosted the event and also will host the championship for the first time.
Bliwas rallied from a double-bogey on his second hole with birdies on four of his next five holes, propelling him to the top spot in the Boys Division.
This is my last junior tournament, so I would have taken just qualifying, said Bliwas, who will be attending the University of Colorado in the fall. It means a lot to me to get my first tournament win in my last event.
In addition to Bliwas, 14 players will join him and complete the championship field, including seven top-10 finishers: Ben Black of Frankenmuth, Mich., shot 70, one of three sub-par rounds; Michael Cress of Dublin, Ohio, at 71; Ryan Hocker of Prospect, Ky., at 72; Bryan Sheridan of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., and Corey Welch of Floyds Knobs, Ind., at 73; and Andrew Rickard of New Castle, Pa., and Robert Gleixner of Greenwood, Ind., at 74. Samuel Johnson of Goshen, Ky., Brian Sparks of Shelby Twp., Mich., Alex Zeoli of Rochester Hills, Mich., Nathan Wine of Fort Wayne, Ind., Kevin Reeves of Columbus, Ohio, Robert Harman of Perrysburg, Ohio, and Reed Black of Frankenmuth, Mich., complete the list of Boys Division qualifiers.
Co-medalist Springer relied on consistency in his round of 69. With five birdies on the day, the first-time Srixon Qualifier medalist said the event built his confidence.
It gives me some hope, Springer said. Playing well here means I have what it takes to play well in AJGA events.
Springer and four other players in the top 15 opted out of this week's event, accepting a tournament exemption in place of a qualifying position: Chase Williams of Columbus, Ohio, Scott Hockemeyer of Indianapolis, Ind., Payne Gniewek of Trenton, Mich., and Max Do of Lakewood, Calif.
In the Girls Division, Park used pars to advance to the championship and earn Srixon Qualifier medalist honors for the second time.
I learned where I need to hit the ball, Park said. I'm confident because I think I can do well and I know how to avoid trouble.
Park leads the four qualifiers earning spots in the Girls Division championship field. Meghna Bal of Wesley Chapel, Fla., shot a 77 and finished second, while Megan Curran of Dublin, Ohio, and Kelly Butler of Centerburg, Ohio, complete the qualifier list in the Girls Division.
Christina Thomas of Rocky River, Ohio, was the only top-four finisher who chose to accept a tournament exemption in place of qualifying for this week's event.
