STANLEY FIRES 67 TO LEAD FIRST ROUND AT HP BOYS JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
Thomas sits in second at 70

ORLANDO â€” Kyle Stanley, 17, of Gig Harbor, Wash., fired an impressive 5-under-par 67 in the opening round of the HP Boys Junior Championship at Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club & Lodge to take a three-shot lead after the first round of play. Ryan Thomas, 17, of Alameda, Calif., is second on the leader board behind Stanley after carding a 2-under-par 70.

The HP Boys Junior Championship is a 72-hole event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club & Lodge, home of the PGA TOUR'S Bay Hill Invitational. The par-72 layout is being played at 7,189 yards. Past Champions of the event include Tiger Woods (1992), David Duval (1989) and Jim Furyk (1987). The event, which features of 90 of the nation's premier junior boys, includes participants from 22 states, Chile, Colombia and Japan.

Stanley, who began play on No. 10, recorded four birdies on his first nine, which helped him to an impressive 4-under-par 32. Stanley would card three birdies on his last nine and finished with a three-shot lead.

“I feel like I hit a lot of good shots today,” Stanley said. “I made a birdie on No. 10 and fed off that all day.”

Stanley recorded second-place finishes at this year's Rolex Tournament of Champions and the Pacific Northwest International Junior presented by Jeff Troesch and was the champion of the 2004 Hargray Junior Championship.

Thomas, who was grouped with Stanley, shot 35 on the front and back nine during Tuesday's first round. After carding four birdies, Thomas hopes to continue his strong play during the second round.

“You have to hit some good golf shots,” Thomas said of the course. “You have to keep it in play and putt well.”

Thomas, who was the 2005 champion at the Las Vegas Founders Junior Golf Championship, hit all nine greens in regulation during the first round and looks to do more of the same Wednesday.

Tied in third place at 1-under-par 71 are Jordan Elsen of Kenosha, Wis., Samuel Saunders of Windermere, Fla., and Josh Jones of The Colony, Texas.
