DRISKELL TAKES MEDALIST HONORS BY ONE STROKE IN SRIXON QUALIFIER Davis and Weathersby share medalist honors in Girls Division at Quail Ridge
BARTLETT, Tenn. Blake Driskell of Cape Girardeau, Mo., carded a 3-under-par 67 to take top honors at the True Temper/David Gossett Junior Championship Srixon Qualifier. In the Girls Division, Sarah Beth Davis of Victoria, Texas and Hannah Weathersby of Belvidere, Tenn., shared medalist honors with 3-over-par 73s.
The True Temper/David Gossett Junior Championship Srixon Qualifier, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, was held at the Quail Ridge Golf Course. Sixteen boys and three girls gained entry into the 84-player event that begins on Tuesday, July 19, at the Tournament Players Club at Southwind.
Driskell carded one eagle and five birdies on the day, which led him to a one stroke victory over Ross Reed of Anderson, Ind. Driskell's goal for the day was qualify and he said he couldn't be happier with medalist honors.
I thought I was pretty lucky, my shots were going straight. I want to play at Southwind pretty bad, said Driskell.
Also qualifying to play in the Boys Division with a score of 68 was Reed. Rob Hudson of Fayetteville, Ark., Zachary Fischer of Wake Village, Texas, and Connor McHenry of Jefferson City, Mo., all qualified with scores of 1-under-par 69.
Jared Wolfe of Louisville, Ky., qualified with a 71, while David Zickler of Florence, Ala., Bobby Short of Nashville, Tenn., and Cory Atkins of Washington, Texas, all qualified with 72s. Zack Molnar of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Steven Young of Memphis, Tenn., both qualified with 73s. Jay Twitty of Springfield, Mo., Drew McLellan of Brookwater, Australia, J.B. Farrell of Collierville, Tenn., Jason Glass of Whitehouse, Ohio, and Will Hogan of Ozark, Mo., also qualified after shooting 4-over-par 74s.
Chung Lee of Suwanee, Ga., and Taylor Lucas of Collierville, Tenn., both shot 2-over-par 72s but decided to use the AJGA's opt out policy. Also choosing to opt out with a score of 74 was Andrew Glassell of Clarksville, Tenn. The players will receive one tournament exemption in lieu of playing in the tournament.
In the Girls Divison, Davis and Weathersby both ended with three birdies on the day to put them two strokes ahead of the next place qualifier. Davis said after Sunday's round she is looking forward to the upcoming tournament.
I hope to do well and place in the top five, said Davis.
Weathersby used the AJGA's opt out policy in lieu of playing in the tournament but said that she was happy with her score.
I just wanted to break 75. I thought it would be a lot more difficult than it was, said Weathersby.
Also qualifying after carding a 75, was Jamie Kuhn of Miami.
