CALVO IN POSITION FOR FIRST CAREER AJGA WIN

Karle takes a three-stroke  shot lead in Girls Division

LUBBOCK, Texas    Jay Calvo, 18, of Baird, Texas took the lead Wednesday at the Randy Smith Classic presented by Myco Industries, Inc. after his second round  2-under-par 70 put him at 5-under-par for the tournament.  Taylore Karle, 14, of Scottsdale, Ariz., shot a 1-under-par 71 to lead the Girls Division at even par 144.

The Randy Smith Classic Presented by Myco Industries, Inc. is a 54-hole tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at The Rawls Course at Texas Tech University.  Texans make up the majority of the field, with 100 of the 120 participating juniors coming from the Lone Star State.  Six other states are represented in the tournament and three Rolex Junior All-Americans are participating in the event.

Calvo said everything in his golf game has been going well this week to put him in position for his first career AJGA victory.

“I’m not going to do anything different tomorrow, just stick to the normal stuff and have fun out there,” Calvo said.

Calvo’s second round followed a first-round score of 69, and would have been lower if it were not for two three-putts during the round.

“I’m still feeling pretty good, especially with the lead,” Calvo said.

One stroke behind Calvo at 4-under-par 140 are Paul Haley, 17, of Dallas, and Scott Barton, 17, also of Dallas.  Haley carded a 3-under-par 69 during Wednesday’s second round and Barton, the first round leader, shot an even-par 72.

Completing the all-Texan top five in the Boys Division are Bobby Massa of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Cody Wimberly of Lubbock, each with a two-day total of 3-under-par 141. Two strokes behind them at 143 is Jeremy Martin of Slaton, Texas, who made six birdies on his way to a tournament-low score of 67 in the second round.

Karle said her 1-under-par round was a product of good putting and starting hot with birdies on hole Nos. 2 and 5. Karle bogeyed Nos. 7, 8 and 10 before finishing her final eight holes 2-under-par for a back nine score of 1-under 35.

“I was able to make saves when I got into trouble,” she said.

After her round, Karle said she was looking to score even better during the final round.

“If I keep playing like this I think I can put up a low number,” Karle said.

In pursuit of Karle in the final round Thursday will be first-round co-leader Lindsay Cullen of Allen, Texas, who shot a 3-over-par 75 to finish three shots back. Brittany Tomerlin of San Angelo, Texas, is in third after firing a 1-under-par 71 Wednesday to put her at 149 for the tournament. Lila Barton of Dallas fired her second consecutive 76 for a total of 152. Rounding out the top five is Sarah Zwartynski of Allen, Texas, with a two-day total of 153.

The final round will begin Thursday at 7 a.m. off the first tee at The Rawls Course at Texas Tech University.  For more information about the Randy Smith Classic presented by Myco Industries, Inc., please contact tournament headquarters at (806) 742-4680.
