DUNLAP, CHARLSON FIRE 69 FOR BOYS'CO-MEDALISTS HONORS IN LUBBOCK
Smith top qualifier in Girls Division
LUBBOCK, Texas - With favorable conditions and 21 spots up for grabs, Sunday's qualifier for the Randy Smith Classic presented by Myco Industries, Inc. featured low scoring in both divisions. In the Boys Division, Rick Dunlap, 18, of Dallas, and Matt Charlson, 18, of Ninnekah, Okla., tied for first with matching scores of 3-under-par 69. Raelyn Smith, 17, of Odessa, Texas, medaled in the Girls Division with a 1-under-par 71.
Charlson said great putting led to six birdies during the round, and also to more confidence heading into the first round of the main event Tuesday.
âI feel like if I play three decent rounds I'll end up near the top,â Charlson said, referring to the upcoming tournament.
Dunlap, who missed tying his personal tournament best by one stroke, attributed his good play to all facets of his game.
âI hit the ball well and on top of that I was making putts out there,â he said.
In lieu of playing in this week's event, Dunlap will earn a Tournament Exemption for a future AJGA event.
Other under-par qualifying scores in the Boys Division belonged to Miles Seybert, 18, of Perryton, Texas with a 2-under-par 70, as well as Seth White, 16, of Mansfield, Texas, Drew Haka, 15, of Allen, Texas, and Jeremy Martin, 18, of Slaton, Texas, with scores of 1-under-par 71. Patrick Logan, 16, of Fort Worth, Texas, Aaron Martin, 16, of Orange, Texas, Ben Allen, 16, of Mansfield, Texas, Dillon Kirk, 15, of San Antonio, Texas, Taylor Knott, 15, of Arlington, Texas, and Nathan Chambers, 14, of Purcell, Okla., qualified with scores of 1-over-par 73. Rounding out the field with 2-over-par 74 were Tyler Sheppard, 16, of Midland, Texas, Phillip Hui, 17, of San Antonio, Texas, Timothy Madigan, 16, of Rio Rancho, N.M., and Alex Zannes, 17, of Albuquerque, N.M.
Smith medaled with the only under-par round in the Girls Division, besting the field by eight strokes with a 71. Smith attributed her success to ball striking, and said if her putting improves she likes her chances to do well in this week's 54-hole event.
âIf I make some putts, I can beat anybody,â Smith said.
Joining Smith in the field Tuesday will be Laura Wolfe, 18, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Claire Wolfe, 16, of Lubbock, Texas, with scores of 84. Also qualifying were Jessica Fleming, 17, of Enid, Okla., with an 85, Anna Hataway, 17, of Cache, Okla., with an 89 and Kellee Shaheen, 12, of DeQuincy, La., with a 95.
