BOWMAN, GILBERT SHARE MEDALIST HONORS AT WINDSTONE GOLF CLUB
Anderson's consistent tee shots drive her to top of Srixon Qualifier round

RINGGOLD, Ga. — Will Bowman of Greensboro, N.C., and Chandler Gilbert of Lexington, Ky., were co-medalists Sunday at the Srixon Qualifier for the Ringgold Telephone Company Junior Classic in Ringgold, Ga. Laura Anderson of Tompkinsville, Ky., scored a 74 to lead the Girls Division by four strokes.

For Bowman and Gilbert, it was their first berth into an American Junior Golf Association tournament with their 2-under-par 68 final scores.

The Srixon Qualifier Series, an 18-hole event conducted by the AJGA, was held at WindStone Golf Club, Sunday. Eighty-nine junior golfers — 78 boys and 11 girls — competed in the event, including 31 from Georgia and 15 from Tennessee.

An improved putting game allowed Bowman to sink birdies on hole Nos. 1, 3 and 5.

“I putted a lot better than in the past,” he said. “The course set up well for me and the greens were good. I like tight courses with small greens.”

Gilbert hopes strong putting and playing smart will propel him through tournament play, which is scheduled to begin Tuesday, June 7.

“I played pretty well,” Gilbert said. “I had some good shots at the right times. I would like to putt a little better and keep it in play (for the tournament) and know when to go for the pins and when not to.”

In the Girls Division, Anderson's play allowed her to overcome a double bogey on the final hole to qualify for the tournament.

“My driving went well until the last hole. But, the course played great. I loved it,” she said.

Also qualifying for the Ringgold Telephone Company Junior Classic are Jayne Curtis of Calhoun, Ga.; Heather Arnold of Lenoir City, Tenn.; and Jillian Brodd of Knoxville, Tenn.

Bowman chose to opt out in lieu of accepting a tournament exemption for his Performance Based Entry status. In addition to Gilbert, added to Tuesday's field are: H.B. Chavous of Evans, Ga.; Cory Fulford of Rocky Mount, N.C.; Timothy Kim of Rome, Ga.; Brandon Bunn of Knoxville, Tenn.; David Cline of Smyrna, Ga.; Alexander Coughlin of White Pine, Tenn.; Hunter Howell of Raeford, N.C.; and Chad Andrews of Cairo, Ga.
