GOINGS ATOP BOYS DIVISION IN GARLAND
Cho leads by one in Girls Division at Oakridge Country Club
GARLAND, Texas — John Mark Goings of Cabot, Ark., shot an opening-round 1-under-par 70 for a three-stroke lead in the Boys Division at the Ashworth Junior at Oakridge. Christine Cho of La Crescenta, Calif., carded a 78 to pace the Girls Division.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Ashworth Junior at Oakridge is a 36-hole stroke play event featuring junior golfers from 17 states, including 32 from the state of Texas. The AJGA's Ashworth Junior Series is specifically designed for first-time AJGA members or those who have not yet participated in an AJGA Open event, AJGA Invitational or Nike Golf Junior All-Star Series event in the current calendar year.
Goings, who is playing in his first AJGA event, finished the front nine at 1-over-par, but was able to make a run on the way back in. Goings carded four birdies on the back nine, including consecutive birdies on Nos. 12 and 13.
“I played decent today,” Goings said. “I just went out and had fun today and things went well,” he added.
Goings was able to finish his round with a birdie on No. 18 and he is optimistic heading into Sunday's final round.
“I'm going to play as well as I can tomorrow and hopefully it will be enough,” Goings said. “I am looking forward to going out and seeing what happens,” he said.
Beau Willis of Weatherford, Texas, is three strokes behind Goings after shooting an opening-round 2-over-par 73. Jake Powell of Coppell, Texas, sits alone in third after carding a 74. Justin Aragon of Las Vegas, N.M., and Neal Robinson of Dallas are tied for fourth, after each carded a 75.
In the Girls Division, Cho finished at 7-over-par for the first-round. She holds a one-stroke lead over Raelene Baker of La Mesa, Calif. Cho credited her consistency and the good playing conditions for placing her atop the Girls Division.
“The greens are in really good shape and I played well, except for a few mistakes,” Cho said. “I hit some good drives today and overall I was pleased with how I played.”
MacKinzie Kline of Encinitas, Calif., finished with a 79. Emma Lavy of Fayetteville, Ark., and Abby Cotter of Noblesville, Ind., shot matching 80s and sit two shots back.
The final round will be an 8:30 a.m. shotgun on Sunday at the Oakridge Country Club.
