AJGA SAND BARRENS JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
Sand Barrens Golf Club
Swainton, New Jersey
June 11-14, 2001
STRONG BACK NINE LEADS JASON LOUTH
TO FIRST AJGA VICTORY
Elizabeth Janangelo holds off a strong field to win
Girls' title
SWAINTON, N.J. - Jason Louth of Victoria, Texas,
shot a final-round 73 to win the Boys Division of the
AJGA Sand Barrens Junior Championship. In the Girls
Division, Elizabeth Janangelo of West Hartford, Conn.,
was able to hold off hard charging Saunderstown, R.I.,
native Anna Grzebien to capture the girls' title.
The third annual 54-hole boys and girls event, conducted
by the American Junior Golf Association, featured 90
of the top junior golfers in the country. Twenty-three
states and Canada were represented in this year's field.
After struggling on the front side with a 3-over-par
39, Louth put together a 2-under-par 34 on the back
nine to win his first AJGA event. Carding birdies on
Nos. 13, 14 and 15, Louth gained a lead he would not
relinquish.
"I got down on myself after shooting the 39 on
the front nine, but I saw it was still possible to make
a comeback," said Louth. "I made a couple
of putts and that put me back in it."
Louth, who had struggled to keep his driver in play
all week, finally was able to make the necessary adjustments
on the second nine.
"I was much more consistent with my driver today,"
said Louth who finished two strokes ahead of fellow
second round co-leader Blaine Peffley of Lebanon, Pa.
Stefan Wistorf of Niceville, Fla., also finished two
shots back and recorded the low boy's final round with
a 69.
Filling out the top five in the Boys Division were
Benjamin Spitz of Norwell, Mass., and Tarik Can of New
York, N.Y., at 217.
In the Girls Division, Janangelo fired a final-round
70 to win the tournament, despite not having used a
driver the entire week.
"I had good course management out there today,"
said Janangelo. "I stayed with my game plan and
played more conservatively. The key to this course is
to keep the ball in play and I was able to do that.
I also putted well when I had to."
Janangelo got a bit of a scare as she watched Anna
Grzebien shoot a final-round 69, including a 32 on the
front nine. But Janangelo birdied Nos. 14, 15 and 16
on her way to a back nine 34 to take the girls' championship.
"Anna played great," said Janangelo. "We
were able to feed off of each other throughout the week.
It means a lot to win against such strong competition."
Rounding out the top three in the Girls Division was
Mary Ellen Grzebien of Saunderstown, R.I., at 223.
