AJGA ROLEX TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS
The Westin Innisbrook Resort
Tarpon Springs, Fla.
July 9-13, 2001
SIMPSON, FERRERO ADD THEIR NAMES
TO PRESTIGIOUS ROLEX WINNERS' LIST
TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - Webb Simpson and Lisa
Ferrero inked their names onto one of junior golf's
most storied winners' lists Friday with wins at the
24th annual Rolex Tournament of Champions. Simpson fired
the low round of the day on Innisbrook's Copperhead
Course, a 3-under 68, to edge Kevin Na by one stroke.
In the Girls Division, Ferrero posted an even-par 71
to record a four-shot win in her final AJGA event.
The 72-hole event, conducted by the American Junior
Golf Assocation at The Westin Innisbrook Resort, featured
170 players from 33 states and five foreign countries
before a 36-hole cut reduced the field to 83 players
for the third and fourth rounds. Previous champions
include Phil Mickelson, David Duval, Leta Lindley and
Grace Park. Innisbrook last played host to the event
in 1995, when current professionals Ryuji Imada and
Beth Bauer finished atop the leaderboard.
Simpson's low round score of 68 earned him his first
AJGA victory. The Raleigh, N.C., native opened his round
with birdies on the first two holes and added another
birdie on the par-3 eighth hole to make the turn at
2-under 34. The 15-year-old then went on to birdie two
of the first three holes on the back nine and converted
a critical up-and-down on the 18th hole to earn the
win.
"I was about 35-feet short and to the right,"
recalls Simpson on the tournament winning par save on
the 72nd hole of the tournament. "I chipped it
up to about four feet and made the putt.
"I only had one goal this week, and that was to
put myself in position to have a chance to win today.
It turned out to be the right goal, and it feels great
to win here."
Na, of Diamond Bar, Calif., recorded a final-round
73 to earn sole possession of second place. The 17-year-old
added another outstanding finish to his brilliant junior
career. The first-team Polo Golf Junior All-American
has already earned two national titles in the 2001 season.
Second-round co-leader Casey Wittenberg of Memphis,
Tenn., posted a 1-over 72 Friday and earned third place.
Wittenberg, who is currently the top-ranked player in
the Golfweek/Titleist Performance Index, was looking
to win his second "major" of the 2001 season.
He captured the AJGA Polo Golf Junior Classic back in
November.
Reigning Polo Golf Boys Junior Player of the Year Matthew
Rosenfeld of Plano, Texas, took fourth place while Ben
Goforth of Shelby, N.C., rounded out the top five.
In the Girls Division, the University of Texas-bound
Ferrero recorded an even-par 71 to cruise to the four-shot
win. She stood at 3-under on her round through the first
five holes and never looked back. The win is the second
"major" win in her junior career; last August
she won the U.S. Girls Junior Championship.
"Except for Canon Cup, this will be my last AJGA
event so it feels great to win," said Ferrero,
who graduated from Lodi High School in Lodi, Calif.,
last month. "The key this week was definitely my
iron play. I stuck a lot of shots and gave myself great
birdie chances throughout the week."
Carding the low round of the day in the Girls Division
was Jackie Beers of Midlothian, Va., with a 68. After
opening with a 76, Beers recorded rounds of 73-72-68
the rest of the way to catapult into second place.
Second-round leader Erica Blasberg of Corona, Calif.,
posted her second straight 75 to earn third-place honors.
Three players tied for fourth place, including defending
champion and local favorite Mallory Code. Code, of Tampa,
joined Whitney Wade of Glasgow, Ky., and Nicole Melton
of San Antonio, Texas, in a share of fourth place.
The 2002 Rolex Tournament of Champions, the 25th annual
event, will be held the second week of July at The Desert
Mountain Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
