AJGA ROLEX TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS

July 9-13, 2001

GOFORTH AND BLASBERG CONQUER ISLAND COURSE IN FIRST ROUND
24th annual Rolex Tournament of Champions gets underway at Innisbrook

TARPON SPRINGS, FLA. -- Ben Goforth of Shelby, N.C., and Erica Blasberg of Corona, Calif., each fired 5-under-par 67s to take the lead Tuesday in their respective divisions of the AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions.

The Rolex Tournament of Champions, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, features 170 players from 33 states and five foreign countries, and includes 56 Polo Junior Golf All-Americans.

Goforth, who qualified for this event after tying for second in the AJGA Henry-Griffitts Junior at Furman, carded nines of 35-32 to grab the first-round lead in the Boys Division. He was 1-under-par on the front nine, but turned it on with a 4-under-par 32 -- which featured four birdies -- on the back nine. For his round, he had seven birdies, two bogeys and nine pars on the 6,881-yard, par-72 Island Course layout.

"I made a couple of long putts on Nos. 13 and 15 that helped me keep my momentum for the rest of the round," Goforth said.

"I was really excited to play in this tournament," noted Goforth, who is playing in his first AJGA invitational. "It helped me to stay focused on my round."

Goforth said that previous success gave him confidence heading into this week, and will help him prepare for the rest of the event.

"I'm going to try and play consistent and not get too excited if I hit a good shot or too down if I hit a bad one," Goforth added. "There's three more rounds ahead of me."

Henry Liaw (33-36--69) of Rowland Heights, Calif.; Jeff Overton (33-36--69) of Evansville, Ind.; Brendon Todd (32-37--69) of Cary, N.C.; Jeff Bell (35-34--69) of Plano, Texas; and Kevin Na (36-33--69) of Diamond Bar, Calif., are all two shots back. Na is the only player among the five to play the Copperhead Course in the first round.

In the Girls Division, Blasberg scorched the Island Course for a 5-under-par 67 and holds a four-shot lead after the first round. The 17-year-old played a near-perfect round, carding five birdies and 13 pars in her round. She birdied Nos. 2, 4, 6, 10 and 16 for nines of 33-34.

"I hit the ball straight all day," Blasberg said. "On the front, I hit every fairway and green. I gave myself a lot of putts that were close to the pin."

Blasberg also changed things up in her golf bag for the tournament.

"I'm using a new putter and different balls this week," Blasberg said. "Plus, my boyfriend gave me a ball mark that wished me good luck, so I think that helped."

Blasberg is a two-time champion of the AJGA Compaq Junior Championship at Trophy Lake. She is shooting for her third AJGA title, and expects a stiffer challenge from the Copperhead Course.

"I think the Island Course is the easier course, so the next three days are going to be on the tougher course," Blasberg added. "I still need to shoot some low numbers out there to have a chance to win."

Nicole Melton of San Antonio, Texas; Jane Lee of Palm Desert, Calif.; and Perry Swenson of Charlotte, N.C., are all four shots back at 71. Defending champion Mallory Code of Tampa, Fla.; Whitney Wade of Glasgow, Ky.; and Elizabeth Janangelo of West Hartford, Conn., are all five shots back at 72. Only Code and Janangelo played the Copperhead Course in the first round.
