SIX BIRDIES PROPEL GAMBONINI TO MEDALIST HONORS
AT AJGA ARIZONA JUNIOR CLASSIC QUALIFIER

LAVEEN, Ariz. - Jason Gambonini of Encinitas, Calif., carded six birdies en route to a 4-under-par 68 and medalist honors at day two of qualifying for the AJGA Arizona Junior Classic.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, Sunday's qualifier at Aguila Golf Course was one of 35 events in the 2001 Pepsi Qualifier Series. The 69 participants in the event were competing for the final four Boys Division spots in next weekend's AJGA Arizona Junior Classic at The Raven Golf Club at South Mountain.

Gambonini, 18, said his putter was the key to his round, having used only 24 strokes on the greens.

"I made everything today," he said. "And I was able to stay out of the bunkers. These fairway bunkers are lethal. The only way to get out of them is with a wedge."

Gambonini's only blemish was a double-bogey on the par-4 fourth hole.

"I'm looking forward to the AJGA Arizona Junior Classic," he said. "I'll do the same thing I did today, take it one shot at a time and give myself the opportunity for birdies."

The other three qualifiers were Martin Carranza of Los Lunas, N.M., at 70, Neno Boonyaplanun of Irvine, Calif., at 71, and Tim McKenney of Scottsdale, Ariz., at 72. McKenney overcame three players in a sudden-death playoff for the fourth and final spot, converting an eagle on the first playoff hole.
Fifteen states and Japan will be represented in the 144-player AJGA Arizona Junior Classic field, including 28 Arizona juniors. Twenty-four Polo Golf Junior All-Americans are slated to compete. Past champions of the AJGA Arizona Junior Classic include University of Southern California freshman Hunter Mahan.
