MOORE STILL ROLLING THROUGH RTJ
Nicole Hage battles back, takes Girls Division lead

MOBILE, Ala. - Jonathan Moore of Portland, Ore., maintained his first-round Boys Division lead at the AJGA Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Junior Classic by shooting a 1-under-par 71 on the Falls Course of Magnolia Grove Golf Club on Sunday. In the Girls Division, Nicole Hage of Coral Springs, Fla., came from two shots back to claim the second-round lead with a 3-under-par 69 on the Crossings Course.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Junior Classic, features a field of 169 juniors ages 13-18 representing 26 states and two countries. Held by the Magnolia Grove Golf Club on both the Falls and Crossing courses, this week's field includes 13 players from the state of Alabama and 10 Polo Golf Junior All-Americans.

In the Boys Division, Moore played the first 34 holes of the tournament bogey-free. After firing a 4-under-par 68 in the opening round, he turned at 2-under-par for the day and then went on to birdie holes 13, 15 and 16 on the back side, all with 4-iron approaches to 10, eight and two feet respectively.

Moore finally slipped as he came to the par-4 17th. A bad lie on his second shot and a buried bunker shot on his fourth helped hand him a triple-bogey seven. A bogey on No. 18 followed, leaving him with a 68-71--139 two-day tournament total.

"I've been hitting so many good golf shots," Moore said. "It would have been nice to finish strong, but I'm happy with the way I'm playing."

With only a one-shot advantage over James Vargas of Miami, Fla., he knows there is still work to do. Vargas tied for fourth in last year's event and second in 1999 and 1998.

"I know everyone says it, but you have to play your own game," he said. "I just need to put myself in position to finish strong."

Chasing Moore when play begins tomorrow will be Vargas at 140, Cale Barr of Versailles, Ky., Jeff Bell of Plano, Texas, and Casey Wittenberg of Memphis, Tenn., at 142.

In the Girls Division, Hage got off to a fast start on her way to taking over sole possession of the top spot after the second round.

Hage birdied the par-3, 147 yard, 2nd hole by sticking a 7-iron within three feet and then went on to score birdie on Nos. 3, 4 and 8 on the front side. Hage's front-nine 34 came despite missed birdie putts on Nos. 5, 6 and 7 and a double bogey on No. 9

"Everything went well today," Hage said. "I was hitting my driver right down the center and my irons stiff. I was rolling the ball really well on the greens."

After the double bogey on No. 9 and a bogey on No. 12, Hage was able to bounce back with birdies on Nos. 13 and 16 to finish with a round of 69.

"I was 4-under through eight and then the double bogey got me upset," Hage said. "I think that kept me going because I just wanted it more."

Coming right back with a 25-foot birdie putt on No. 13 proved key for Hage in finishing out her round.

"I felt like I was there the whole time, but that just helped me even more," said the 16-year-old Hage.

Hage, who was victorious on the Crossings Course at an AJGA Junior All-Star event in 1999, heads into Monday's final round with the confidence that she can win on the course.

"I've won out here once before and now I'm going to do it again," said Hage. "I just need to stay relaxed and take it one shot at a time."

Hage's 4-under-par tournament total of 140, gives her a two-shot advantage over Jackie Beers of Midlothian, Va., and Irene Cho of La Habra, Calif., and a three-shot lead over first-round leader Paula Creamer of Pleasanton, Calif.

Final-round action will take place on Monday with the Girls Division shotgun beginning at 8 a.m. on the Crossings Course and the Boys Division at 8:30 a.m. on the Falls Course.
