MOORE EARNS FIRST CAREER AJGA TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP
Martin claims Girls Division title with three-day score of 218

MORENO VALLEY, Calif.-Jonathan Moore of Portland, Ore., carded a 4-under-par 68 in the final round and earned his first career AJGA tournament victory Friday with a three-day total of 8-under-par 208 at the AJGA Ashworth Junior Classic at Quail Ranch. Allison Martin of Bakersfield, Calif., took home the championship of the Girls Division with a final round of 1-over-par 73 for a total of 218.

The 54-hole tournament, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, featured 66 boys and 18 girls representing 10 states, Japan and Canada. Three AJGA Polo Golf All-Americans competed in the AJGA Ashworth Junior Classic at Quail Ranch.

The AJGA Ashworth Junior Classic marks the first victory for Moore, 16, whose previous career-high AJGA finish was a 2nd place showing at the AJGA Compaq Junior Classic at English Turn in 2000.

"I just used past experiences from other AJGA tournaments I've played and stayed patient," Moore said of his performance in the final round. "I was able to get the job done."

Moore (68-72-68--208) drained an impressive 15-foot putt to save par from the bunker on the 17th hole and maintain his momentum. He made birdie on three of the final four holes.

Brendan Steele of Idyllwild, Calif., fired the low round of the tournament Friday with a 7-under-par 65. The 18-year-old Steele (74-72-65--211) wrapped up action in second place. Neno Boonyaplanun of Irvine, Calif., carded a 2-under-par 70 to finish in third place at 3-under-par. Rounding out the top five were Daniel Lee of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Mathew Schreiber of Laguna Niguel, Calif., at 2-over-par 218.

In the Girls Division, the 15-year-old Martin (74-71-73--218) claimed her second career AJGA title at the AJGA Ashworth Junior Classic at Quail Ranch. She also took medalist honors at the AJGA Compaq Junior All-Star at Fieldstone in 1999. She credited iron-play for her success in the final round.

"I just tried to think positive all day," Martin said. "Even when my swing wasn't working or my putts weren't falling, I kept telling myself to keep trying and they would start to fall."

First-team AJGA Polo Golf All-American Erica Blasberg of Corona, Calif., carded a final-round 72 to finish in 2nd place. Hannah Jun of San Diego, Calif., fired an even-par round of 72 to finish at 7-over-par 223 and in third place.
