TEXAS NATIVE ATOP THE LEADERBOARD AT KINGWOOD
Spence fires 2-over-par to take the lead

KINGWOOD, Texas-Charlie Spence of Austin, Texas, leads the AJGA Preseason Junior at Kingwood after firing a 2-over-par 74 at the first round Saturday at Kingwood Country Club's Island Course.

The 36-hole event, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, features 84 boys ages 13-18 from 20 states, including 50 Texans. The tournament, the last of three AJGA preseason events, is for AJGA members who have never competed in an AJGA tournament.

Spence, 17, fired a 36-38-74 and takes a one-stroke lead into the final round.

"I hit the ball well today," said Spence, who finished the day with three birdies and 12 pars. "My putting was alright. I was hitting it pretty good off the tee and I had good approach shots.

"The course is in good shape and the temperature was nice. Tomorrow I need to hit fairways and greens and work on my short putts."

One stroke off the pace at 75 are two Texas natives, David Fiegelman of Plano, and Philip Sanchez of The Woodlands. Brian Rickard of Humble, Texas, and Jeff Vance of Garland, Texas, are tied for fourth with 76s.

The final round of the AJGA Preseason Junior at Kingwood will be held Sunday, with tee times running from 7:30-9:27 a.m. off the No. 1 and 10 tees.
