MILLER LEADS FIELD WITH ONLY ROUND BELOW PAR
AT COMPAQ JUNIOR CLASSIC AT THE PINES
Schmucker and Dahl tied for first in Girls Division
NISSWA, Minn. - Zack Miller of
San Rafael, Calif., raced to a 3-shot lead in the Boys
Division after carding an opening round 69 Tuesday at
the AJGA Compaq Junior Classic at the Pines. Amy Schmucker
of Cold Spring, Minn., and Erica Dahl of Fargo, N.D.
share the lead in the Girls Division at 5-over-par 77.
In its fifth year, the American Junior
Golf Association's Compaq Junior Classic at the Pines
features a field of 84 players representing 17 states
and Canada. 40 Minnesotans are competing in their home
state this week.
"I came out today just trying to put myself in
contention because you can't win it on the first day,"
Miller said of his opening round. "I came out and
hoped to be near the top of the leaderboard and go from
there the rest of the week."
The 17-year-old Miller used four birdies on the back
nine to wrap up the first round at 3-under par. Miller
has never finished better than fourth in 14 career AJGA
events. Citing the difficulty of the course, he said
he plans to continue to employ a conservative strategy
while seeking his first-career AJGA win.
"The course can really get you in trouble if you
hit bad tee-shots," the Californian said. "I
played it safe today and hit irons off the tee. I was
able to hit a lot of greens and my putts were dropping."
Kyle Nathan of Winnetka, Ill., sits in second place
in the Boys Division with an opening round of even-par
72.
"I figured I had to play conservative and not
be too aggressive," Nathan said. "I was able
to stick to my game plan pretty well."
David Schultz of Fargo, N.D., is third after shooting
1-over-par 73, while Spencer Hutton of St. Cloud, Minn.,
and Charlie Ruppert of Minot, N.D., share fourth with
scores of 2-over-par 74.
In the Girls Division, Schmucker and Dahl both shot
opening rounds of 5-over-par 77 and stand tied for first.
Dahl said she will look to focus on her own performance
as the tournament continues.
"I'm not going to worry about (the rest of the
field)," the 17-year-old Dahl said. "I'm just
going to concentrate on my game. Tomorrow is just another
day."
Schmucker admitted she was pleasantly surprised with
her score Tuesday.
"I had a tough time at the range this morning,"
Schmucker said. "I was thinking I'd go back to
the basics and scrap together something decent. So I
am pretty happy with a 77."
Three strokes off the lead in third is Agnes Kim of
Woodbury, Minn. Kim fired an opening round of 8-over-par
80.
Second-round action gets underway Wednesday at Grand
View Lodge, The Pines with tee-times beginning at 7:30
a.m. For more information on the Compaq Junior Classic
