SIX BOYS, TWO GIRLS FILL FINAL SPOTS FOR PING MYRTLE BEACH JUNIOR CLASSIC AT MYRTLEWOOD GOLF CLUB

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.-- Jason Murray of Jacksonville, Fla., shot a 1-under-par 71 to grab medalist honors and qualify for the AJGA PING Myrtle Beach Junior Classic. Julieta Granada of Bradenton, Fla., carded a 77 to lead the Girls Division.

The Pepsi Qualifier Series event presented by ClubCorp was conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Myrtlewood Golf Club, PineHills Course, and featured 85 players representing 13 states.

Murray, who carded four birdies on the day, posted nines of 35-36 to lead the Boys Division.

"I played well most of the day, but I thought I messed up at the end of my round," Murray said. "On my final holes, I had a double bogey, birdie and bogey. I thought I would qualify, but I didn't think I would take medalist honors.

"If I play my game then I know I will place well in the tournament," Murray said. "I just have to stay focused and grind out the rounds."

Martin Ureta of Tampa, Fla.; Matt Collings of Newton, N.C.; Matthew Reed of Cartersville, Ga.; Richie Hunt of Elm City, N.C., and John Chandler of Sumter, S.C., rounded out the remaining qualifying spots. Ureta carded an even-par 72, while Collings, Reed, Hunt and Chandler shot 1-over-par 73s.

In the Girls Division, Granada carded nines of 41-36 to qualify for her third AJGA tournament.

"I am going to have a collection of these Pepsi trophies," said a joking Granada who also took medalist honors at the Henry-Griffitts Junior at Furman two weeks ago. "I didn't play well on the front, but I finally starting hitting my shots on the back."

Also qualifying in the Girls Division was Mallory Hetzel of Summerville, S.C. Hetzel carded nines of 39-39 for a 6-over-par 78.

The 54-hole event will be conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Myrtlewood Golf Club, PineHills Course, June 18-21. Tee times will run from 7:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. off the first tee. The tournament will feature 120 players representing 21 states, Canada and Puerto Rico. Headlining the tournament field are honorable mention Polo Golf Junior All-Americans Doug Kingston of Bethlehem, Pa., and defending champion Ashley Hoagland of Palmetto, Fla.
