AJGA MARSICO FUNDS COLORADO JUNIOR
ROUNDUP
Pelican Lakes Golf & Country Club
Windsor, Colo.
July 31-Aug. 3, 2001
TWO FRESH FACES FILL WINNER'S CIRCLE
Marty Melcher and Leah Whiting both claim first AJGA
Title in first AJGA event
WINDSOR, Colo. - The road to Marty Melcher's
and Leah Whiting's first national title was not as easy
as they would have liked. Melcher, of Redlands, Calif.,
needed three sudden-death playoff holes while Whiting,
who hails from Hilo, Hawaii, sunk a 15-foot par-saving
putt on her 54th and final hole to keep from going into
a sudden-death playoff.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association,
the AJGA Marsico Funds Colorado Junior Roundup featured
99 players representing 17 states. Thirty-six Coloradoans
competed in the event, but in the end, two out-of-staters
grabbed their respective division titles.
Melcher came from two shots back in the final round
to force the sudden-death playoff. He even surprised
himself when he turned in his scorecard.
"I knew I had to make birdies," Melcher said
of his final round 4-under-par 68. "When I found
out I was in the running I was ecstatic."
Melcher caught first- and second-round leader Drew
Stoltz of Ft. Collins, Colo., when he sunk a 15-foot
birdie putt on his final hole.
The third player included in the playoff was Derek
O'Neil of Littleton, Colo. O'Neil overcame an opening-round
78 to fire back-to-back 67's to put him in that position.
After all three parred the first playoff hole, O'Neil
bowed-out on the par-5, 2nd hole. Stoltz three-putted
for bogey on the par-4, 3rd. Melcher then claimed victory
by two-putting from 40 feet for par.
"I had the exact same putt this morning, except
I made it for birdie," Melcher said. "I just
tried to do the same thing."
This AJGA win now gives Melcher the confidence to play
against the best, he said.
"I feel like I can go out and place and shoot
well," Melcher said of his 74-70-68--212 tournament
total. "It feels great knowing that I can compete
with these guys."
Following Melcher, Stoltz and O'Neil at 212 were Woogene
Lee of Fountain Valley, Calif., and Matthew Slovitt
of Winnetka, Ill., at 214.
Whiting went to great lengths to win her first AJGA
Girls Division championship. Besides traveling more
than eight hours by plane and missing the first two
days of school, Whiting fought off Alyssa Otero of Santa
Fe, N.M., during the final round of play to maintain
her second round one-stroke lead.
"I wanted to do it for everyone back home and
all of the support they give me," Whiting said.
"I was just telling myself not to think about being
number one. I didn't want to get big-headed. I did a
good job of keeping my head on straight and that's the
main reason I won."
Whiting, who finished with a 78-72-76--226 tournament
total, was followed by Otero at 227 and Mayumi Kobayashi
of Santa Monica, Calif., at 229.
