KIM HOLDS LEAD AT LUCENT GIRLS JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
Brittany Lang four shots back heading into final
round
LAWRENCE, Kan. - Ina Kim of Encino, Calif.,
fired a 7-over-par 79 today to maintain her lead at
the 10th annual Lucent Technologies Girls Junior Championship
at Alvamar Country Club.
The event, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association,
features 86 players representing 22 states, Canada and
Japan. Former champions of this event include Kellee
Booth, Kelli Kamimura, Leigh Anne Hardin, Miriam Nagl
and Aree and Naree Song-Wongluekiet.
Kim got off to a fast start in the morning, sticking
a 9-iron within six feet on the first hole and sinking
the putt for birdie. Things got tougher for the first-team
Polo Golf Junior All-American as the winds picked up
later in the day. Kim carded five bogeys on the front
and three more on the back en route to a 40-39--79.
"I thought the course played easier today,"
Kim said. "The wind didn't bother me too much,
I just made a lot of stupid mistakes and I didn't set
myself up well."
Kim, who will attend Northwestern University in the
fall, is looking for her fourth career AJGA title and
her first major after a fourth-place finish at Eagle
Bend Golf Course in last year's championship.
"Anyone who shoots in the 70s or low 80s today
will be in contention," Kim said. "I'm just
going to try and keep my drives in the fairway and I'll
work on my putting and hopefully a few more will fall
tomorrow."
Strong afternoon winds contributed to high scores across
the board, with Brittany Lang shooting the low round
of the day with a 76. Lang shot a steady 38 on the front
and back despite double bogeys on Nos. 9 and 18.
"I played solid today except for those two holes,"
Lang said of her round. "Tomorrow I just need to
hit fairways and greens and make putts."
Lang is tied with Torrance, Calif., native Jane Lee
for second place at 157, four strokes off the lead heading
into the final round. Kelly Husted of Sarasota, Fla.,
is in fourth with a 80-78--158. Ashley Rollins of Austin,
Texas, Taylor Leon of Dallas, and Seiko Onoue of La
Habra, Calif., are locked in a three-way tie for fifth
at 160.
Thirteen-year-old Morgan Pressel of Boca Raton, Fla.,
coming off her appearance at the U.S. Women's Open,
carded an 83 for a two-day total of 165.
Final-round action will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
