18-hole record with an 8-under-par 63
DALLAS-Matt Rosenfeld of Plano, Texas, scorched
Lakewood Country Club for an 8-under-par 63 to set the
competitive course record and break away from the pack
Thursday at the AJGA Lucent Technologies Boys Junior
Championship. Rosenfeld carded seven birdies and an
eagle to take a six-stroke lead heading into the final
round.
The 72-hole event, conducted by the American Junior
Golf Association, is being held at the par-71 Lakewood
Country Club. The field features 132 players representing
28 states, Canada, Germany and Japan. Past champions
include Tiger Woods, David Duval, Jim Furyk and Ty Tryon.
Rosenfeld, who started the day one stroke behind the
leaders, got things going early with a chip-in birdie
from a tough lie in the rough on No. 1 and followed
it up with another birdie on the 432-yard, par-4 2nd
hole to move into the lead. Two more birdies on the
front nine and a bogey on No. 9 put Rosenfeld at 3-under-par
at the turn.
"Being able to make bogey on No. 9 after hitting
out of bounds was crucial because things could have
been much worse," Rosenfeld said. "But the
turning point of my round was getting up-and-down from
the sand on No. 12 to make par and stay at 3-under.
I knew it was going to be a good round after that."
After two more birdies on Nos. 14 and 16, Rosenfeld
stuck a 5-iron from 194-yards out within 2-feet of the
hole for a tap-in eagle on No. 17 and calmly rolled
in an uphill 12-footer on No. 18 to tie the AJGA boys
18-hole scoring record and card the low round in the
15-year history of the tournament.
"I'll remember this round for a long time,"
Rosenfeld said. "This is the best round I've ever
shot and it's a great accomplishment for me to do it
at this tournament."
Rosenfeld is in position for his first AJGA victory
of the year and the fifth of his career. The reigning
Polo Golf Junior Player of the Year has four players
sitting six strokes back heading into the final round
and is in position to break the all-time AJGA 72-hole
scoring record.
"I've come close to winning this tournament the
past two years," said Rosenfeld, who tied for fourth
a year ago. "I still have to go out and play well
tomorrow, but I've always felt comfortable at this tournament.
I'm going out tomorrow with the same mindset I've had
all week, which is to shoot a good solid round."
The competitive course record was 66 heading into Thursday
before four players broke the mark, including Benjamin
Spitz of Norwell, Mass., Kevin Larsen of Santa Barbara,
Calif., and Jonathan Moore of Portland, Ore., who each
fired 6-under-par 65s. Spitz and Larsen sit in a four-way
tie for second at 206 with Anthony Kim of La Quinta,
Calif., and Chris Wheeler of Allen, Texas. Moore is
tied for 10th.
Final-round tee times run from 8 a.m. to 11:09 a.m.
