AJGA LAS VEGAS FOUNDERS' LEGACY JUNIOR
The Legacy Golf Club
Henderson, Nevada
June 18-21, 2001
PAT MOORE WINS FIRST AJGA EVENT IN
SUDDEN-DEATH PLAYOFF
Lani Elston shoots final-round 69 to win Girls Division
HENDERSON, Nev. - Pat Moore of Phoenix defeated
Ryan Keeney of Redmond, Wash., in a sudden-death playoff
to earn his first American Junior Golf Association victory
at the AJGA Las Vegas Founders' Legacy Junior. In the
Girls Division, Lani Elston of Spokane, Wash., fired
a final-round 69 to capture her second AJGA title in
one month.
The tournament, conducted by the American Junior Golf
Association, was held at The Legacy Golf Club in Henderson,
Nev. The 12th annual AJGA Las Vegas Founders' Legacy
Junior hosted eighty-four of the nations top juniors,
ages 13-18, representing 11 states and England. The
54-hole event also included ten juniors from Nevada
and 11 Polo Golf Junior All-Americans.
After shooting a final-round 68, Moore was forced to
wait for the last boys group to come in. When second-round
co-leader Keeney finished up a round of 69, the two
went to a playoff that only lasted one hole.
On the first playoff hole, Keeney hit his tee shot
out of bounds and was then forced to take an unplayable
lie on his provisional ball. After hitting out of the
rough, Keeney conceded to Moore.
"This whole week I've been really relaxed,"
said Moore, who will attend the University of New Mexico
in the fall. "I guess you could say that it has
just been my week."
Moore, who trailed by a shot heading into the final
day, put together scores of 34 on the front nine and
back nine, picking up five birdies along the way to
earn him a spot in the playoff.
"I played steady and didn't make any mistakes,"
said Moore who finished the tournament with a 209 total.
"I hit my irons well and made all of my par putts.
I came in not thinking about the fact that I was one
shot back, but just trying to shoot as low a score as
possible.
"It's a good feeling," said Moore of his
first AJGA win. "These are the best players out
there and this is by far the best tournament I've ever
won."
Rounding out the top five places in the Boys Division
were Clay Ogden of West Point, Utah, at 211, Jesse Mueller
of Mesa, Ariz., at 212 and Drew Scott of Henderson,
Nev., and Daniel Summerhays of Farmington, Utah, at
213
In the Girls Division, Elston recorded a final-round
35-34-69 to surpass the second round co-leaders.
Elston, who focused on improving on her short putts
for the final round, did just that on her way to picking
up her second AJGA victory of the summer.
"I made all of my short putts today," said
Elston, who is heading to the University of Idaho in
the fall. "I missed a lot of those putts the past
two days, so I wanted to make those five footers today
and I did that."
"I hit good putts on my first two holes and that
got me feeling real confident for the rest of the round,"
said Elston, who finished with a tournament total of
213. "I just wanted to come in today and play the
best that I could. As long as that happened, I would
be comfortable with how I did."
Rounding out the top three places in the Girls Division
were Lisa Ferrero of Lodi, Calif., at 215 and Young
Pak of Cerritos, Calif., and Christine Fernandez of
Henderson, Nev., at 216.
