PING LANGDON FARMS JUNIOR CLASSIC
Langdon Farms Golf Club
Aurora, Oregon
July 2-5, 2001
UPHAM'S 69 PLACES HIM IN FIRST-PLACE
TIE IN BOYS DIVISION
Mackenzie holds three-shot lead in Girls Division
after second round
AURORA, Ore., - Cody Upham of Vancouver, Wash.,
fired a second-round 69 to join Erik Olson of Renton,
Wash., and Nick Higham of Shelley, Idaho, atop the leaderboard
of the PING Langdon Farms Junior Classic. In the Girls
Division, Paige Mackenzie of Yakima, Wash., held onto
her opening-round lead by shooting a 76.
The PING Langdon Farms Junior Classic, conducted by
the American Junior Golf Association, features 84 of
the nation's top junior golfers ages 13-18. Hosted by
Langdon Farms Golf Club, this week's field includes
players from nine states and Canada, five of whom are
Polo Golf Junior All-Americans.
Upham's second-round 69 came on the heels of a Tuesday
back nine in which he carded a 40.
"I just had a bad finish to a good round yesterday,"
said Upham, who had a 31 on his front nine on Tuesday.
"I hit a lot of good shots early and was able to
keep my momentum after that. I've driven the ball well
the past two days and I've putted well, it's just been
that some of my putts haven't dropped.
Joining Upham in Thursday's final group will be Olson
and Higham who both shot 71.
"I just grinded it out today and didn't give up,"
said Olson. "I just wanted to keep myself in the
tournament today."
"I played the same way today as I did yesterday,"
said Higham, who like Olson followed up his first-round
69 with a 71. "I'm just hitting greens and two-putting.
The key to this course for me is the driver. If I can
hit fairways and greens, I'll be all right."
In Thursday's second-to-last Boys Division group are
Sean Packer of Sumner, Wash., Jeff Osborn of Glendale,
Calif., and David Fern of Spokane, Wash., all with a
two-day total of 141.
In the Girls Division, first-round leader Mackenzie
struggled through her round, but credited her putter
as the reason she is still in the lead.
"I managed to make some putts on the back nine,"
said Mackenzie, who has a two-day total of 147. "I
hit the ball poorly and wasn't hitting good approach
shots. My score would have been a lot higher if not
for my putting."
Sung Lee of Tacoma, Wash., had the low girls round
of the day with a 71 to put her in second place with
a 36-hole total of 150.
"The course was tough today, but I played more
carefully, learned from my mistakes and improved a lot
from yesterday," said Lee. "I always seem
to play the course better on the second day."
Rounding out the top three of the Girls Division is
Sarah Bassett of Spokane, Wash., at 153.
Final-round action begins Thursday with tee times starting
at 7:30 a.m. off the No. 1 and 10 tees.
