LOPEZ ATOP LEADERBOARD AFTER LENGTHY WEATHER DELAY AT KINGWOOD
Niederkohr cards an 83 to lead Girls Division

KINGWOOD, Texas--Lance Lopez of Fresno, Texas, leads the AJGA Compaq Junior All-Star Classic at Kingwood after firing a first round score of 2-under par 70 Tuesday at Kingwood Country Club. Holly Niederkohr of Marysville, Ohio, carded a 10-over-par 83 to take the lead in the Girls Division.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Compaq/David Leadbetter Junior All-Star Series was created in 1998 to give 13-to-15-year-old members the opportunities to play at the national level. The field features 93 golfers from all over the United States, plus Canada and Guam.

The 13-year-old Lopez relied on his accurate drives and solid iron shots to carry him through Kingwood's tight Island Course.

"The fairways on this course are very narrow, and you have to strike the ball well," Lopez said. "If you don't keep it in the fairway, you are going to be in trouble."

Players in the final 12 groups of the day were challenged to maintain focus during a three hour and 41 minute weather delay that started at 3:14 p.m. Play resumed shortly before 7 p.m., with the final groups finishing as daylight expired over Kingwood.

Randy Lowry of Spring, Texas, is one shot off the pace after firing a 1-under-par 71. Kenny Palmer sits in third three strokes back of the lead at 73.

Phelps Brooks, of Cheraw, S.C., Casey Caldwell of Albuquerque, N.M., and Kenny Kim of Cerritos, Calif., fired 2-over-par 74s to share fourth place.

Holly Niederkohr leads the Girls Division after shooting a 39-44--83. Niederkohr, who is playing in her first AJGA event, was aided by two birdies in posting her 10-over-par round.

"I played well today, but I really struggled on the last hole," Niederkohr said. "Tomorrow I hope to hold on to my lead and play the course a little bit smarter."

Four shots back in second place is Natalia Godoy of Cypress, Texas, who carded a first-round 87. Vanessa Brockett of Los Angeles sits in third with an 89.

Final-round action begins at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday at Kingwood Country Club. For more information on the Compaq Junior All-Star Classic at Kingwood, contact tournament headquarters at (281) 358-2171 ext. 245.
