Dodge qualifies in Girls Division with an 82

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Alex Downing of Lee's Summit, Mo., and Derek Smith of Elk City, Okla., both fired 73 to gain co-medalist honors at the AJGA Marsh Kansas City Junior Qualifier. In the Girls Division, Lauren Dodge of Montgomery, Texas, shot an 82 to capture the top spot and gain an entry in the tournament.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Marsh Kansas City Junior features a field of 99 players representing 16 states. Included in this week's field are 19 juniors from Kansas and two Polo Golf Junior All-Americans.

Both Downing and Smith credited their strong rounds to playing conservatively in the extremely warm conditions.

"I played real safe golf today," said Downing, who was playing in his first AJGA event. "It just feels great to qualify in my first AJGA event. I just wanted to come out today and play well and I did that."

Downing, who suffered a double bogey on No. 3, came back with a birdie on No. 4 to right the ship before parring his last three holes.

"After the double bogey, I was still only 2-over-par, which I thought would still be good if I could just hang on," Downing said.

Smith bogeyed holes Nos. 1, 2 and 3 before a par on No. 4 turned things around for him.

"I knew I was still all right after the bogeys," said Smith, who has played in the tournament the past two years. "I figured out what I was doing wrong after that and started hitting the ball strong again."

Also qualifying in the Boys Division were John Kelly, of St. Louis at 74, Will Hanna of The Woodlands, Texas, and Chase Cooper of Guymon, Okla., at 75 and Ryan Melgaard of Blue Springs, Mo., Robert Rice of Witchita, Kan., Eric Chang of Chino Hills, Calif., Michael Robben of Overland Park, Kan., and Justin Setser of Eldron, Mo., at 76.

In the Girls Division, Dodge did not let the weather conditions affect her and concentrated on a simple formula to shoot an 82.

"I was just keeping the ball down the middle and drinking a lot of water to keep from getting dehydrated," said the 16-year-old Dodge. "The weather didn't bother me much being from Texas."

Dodge was 4-over-par heading into the final two holes on the front nine when she strung together birdies on Nos. 8 and 9 to make the turn at 2-over-par 38.

"I made two 15-footers on numbers 8 and 9 and that gave me some confidence heading into the back nine," Dodge said. "I had a couple of bad holes on the back nine and didn't play that well, but I started picking it up again about halfway through."

Joining Dodge in the tournament will be Whitney Stromgren of Topeka, Kan., and Annie Giangrosso of Prairie Village, Kan., who qualified with scores of 85 and 86 respectively.

First-round action begins on Tuesday with tee times running from 7:30 a.m.-12:27 p.m. off of the No. 1 tee.
