Ashley Rollins takes narrow lead in Girls Division

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - When Ryan Henry of Broken Arrow, Okla., left the scoring tent at the AJGA Marsh Kansas City Junior with a 6-under-par 66 under his belt, the only thing he had left was a sigh and a small smile. His 66 placed him atop the Boys Division leaderboard with four other players following him with rounds under par. The Girls Division has Ashley Rollins of Austin, Texas, in the lead coming in with a 2-over-par 74.

The 54-hole event, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at the par-72 Milburn Country Club, features 99 players representing 15 states and includes 21 Kansas natives.

Henry, who placed 5th in this event last year and 4th at the AJGA Golfweek Chicago Junior in June, is happy to be the man to beat. Being the leader will be a new experience for Henry, but a position he's more than willing to accept.

"I've had signs of a good round like this," Henry said. "I finally put it all together. The key is to do the same tomorrow and Thursday."

Henry got off to a good start by slamming home a 40-foot birdie putt on the par-5, 2nd hole. That putt got him headed in the right direction.

"It really set the pace for the whole day," he said. "I just need to repeat it. But whatever happens, happens. I've tried too hard to go kicking myself at this point."

Chasing Henry and his hot putter will be Brian Vahlberg of Norman Okla., at 69, Chris Mabry of Leawood, Kan., at 70 and both Martin Piller of Duncanville, Texas, and Barrett Martens of Platte City, Mo., at 71.

Rollins was also in the running at last year's Marsh Kansas City Junior by placing 3rd. Earlier in the season, she placed 2nd at the AJGA Texace San Antonio Shootout and 4th at the AJGA Lucent Technologies Girls Junior Championship.

Although she has been towards the top of the leaderboard before, she wants to make sure she stays grounded in order to finish strong.

"I'm going to go out and think that I'm not the leader," Rollins said. "One day is one day and one shot is one shot. If I mess up a hole, I know where to miss it. Each day I'm getting more confident."

Following Rollins in the Girls Division is Jennifer Tangtiphaiboontana of Long Beach, Calif., at 75, and Stephanie Ruiz of Edmond, Okla., and Courtney Jones of Lake Quivira, Kan., at 76.

Second-round action begins on Wednesday with tee times running from 7:30 a.m.-12:18 p.m. off the No. 1 tee.
