TWO TEAMS TIED FOR BOYS DIVISION LEAD AT AJGA JUSTIN LEONARD
DELOITTE & TOUCHE JUNIOR TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

Code sisters grab lead in Girls Division

DALLAS - The Washington duo of Ryan Moore and Michael Putnam are tied with Texas natives Randy Lowry and Shane Sigsbee for the top spot in the Boys Division at the AJGA Justin Leonard/Deloitte & Touche Junior Team Championship. Sisters Whitney and Mallory Code of Tampa, Fla., teamed to grab the early lead in the Girls Division.

The 54-hole event, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, features 88 players representing 16 states and Mexico, including 12 Polo Golf Junior All-Americans. PGA Tour star Justin Leonard, a five-time AJGA All-American (1986-90) during his junior career, serves as honorary tournament chairman of the event. A Team Modified Stableford Scoring system will replace the traditional scoring format for the tournament, with points awarded as follows: double-eagle +8, eagle +5, birdie +2, par 0, bogey -1, and double-bogey or worse -3.

Ryan Moore of Puyallup and Michael Putnam of Tacoma posted a score of +10, combining for eight birdies. Moore also eagled the 468-yard, par-5 sixth hole after sticking a 6-iron to 18 feet and draining the putt.

"The course played tough today, there were a lot of bogeys out there," Moore said. "But we balanced each other out real well and never bogeyed the same hole. We just tried to stay positive and post a good score."

Texans Lowry and Sigsby combined for six birdies en route to their +10. Sigsbee of McKinney and Lowry of Spring credited aggressive play for their round one success.

"This format fits my game better," said the 14-year-old Lowry. "I made a lot of birdies and the bogeys didn't hurt me as much. I made a 20-footer on No. 18 to give us momentum going into tomorrow."

Ben Hayes of Scottsdale, Ariz., fired the best round of the day at +11. Hayes and partner T.J. Blanford are tied for third at +7 with Anthony Kim of La Quinta, Calif., and Chad Wilcox of Peoria, Ariz.

"I'm going to try and be a little more aggressive tomorrow," said Hayes, who will attend the University of Southern California in the fall. "I think we should be winning. We played better than we scored and with a better strategy I think we can score better tomorrow."

Reigning Polo Golf Junior Player of the Year Matthew Rosenfeld and Jeff Bell, both of Plano, Texas, are currently in eighth after posting a +1.

The Codes, who both earned Polo Golf Junior All-America status in 2000, combined to post a -3 to take a one-point lead in the Girls Division entering the second round. Whitney birdied Nos. 3, 6, 9, and 16 and the tandem was able to avoid anything worse than a bogey.

"We didn't start too solid," said Whitney. "We were able to get a lot of pars, which can't hurt you and stay away from the doubles."

Paula Creamer of Pleasanton, Calif., and Taylor Leon of Dallas sit a point back in second at -4, while Ashley Knoll of The Woodlands, Texas, and Brittany Lang of McKinney, Texas, are in third at -10.

Second-round action will begin at 9 a.m. on Wednesday. For more information on the AJGA Justin Leonard/Deloitte & Touche Junior Team Championship, please contact the tournament headquarters at (972) 239-1366 ext. 174.
