WHITE CATCHES FIRE ON BACK NINE TO TAKE LEAD AT WETHERSFIELD
Amole matches White with a 68 to take Boys Division lead

WETHERSFIELD, Conn. - Kristen White eagled the 16th hole Tuesday to punctuate a string of five straight sub-par holes en route to a 68 and the opening-round lead at the AJGA Greater Hartford Jaycees Junior Classic. In the Boys Division, Zack Amole carded a 3-under-par 68 to snag the top spot on the leaderboard.

The fourth annual event, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Wethersfield Country Club, features 99 players representing 17 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. Nineteen players in the field hail from Connecticut, including two-time champion Elizabeth Janangelo of West Hartford, the top-ranked player in the country according to the Golfweek/Titleist Performance Index.

White, of Doylestown, Pa., stepped up to the 12th tee at 3-over-par before her stunning stretch put her at 3-under-par for the day as she walked off the 16th green.

"That's never happened before," said White, whose longest putt during her impressive stretch was about 15 feet. "I recently switched putters and my stance and setup, but it's probably a mental thing more than anything else."

The 18-year-old, who won the AJGA ClubCorp Junior Players Championship a year ago, said a simple birdie putt on No. 12 was the catalyst for her blistering stretch.

"I'm not known for my putting," White said. "I'm just as surprised as everybody else."

Three shots back in second place is Mary Ellen Grzebien of Saunderstown, R.I., who posted an even-par 71. Janangelo is also in the hunt following her 1-over 72 in the opening round.

In the Boys Division, Amole, of Denver, Pa., also found success on the closing nine, where he drained three birdies.

"I had one of my best ball-striking rounds in a while today," said the 17-year-old Amole, who totaled five birdies on his round. "I missed a lot of putts that could have dropped so it could have been real low."

Amole's best previous AJGA finish was a second-place showing at the Lessing's AJGA two years ago. His top AJGA showing of 2001 was an 11th-place finish at the Sand Barrens Junior Championship back in June, but the highlight of Amole's summer came in July, when he qualified for the BUY.COM Hershey Open.

John Browndorf of Rumson, N.J., shot a 2-under 69 to take sole possession of second place. Mark Baldwin of Laconia, N.H., and Thomas Eckler of Pittsford, N.Y., are tied for third at 1-under-par 70. Five players recorded even-par 71s.

The top-12 boys through the first round hail from 11 different states.
