AJGA GREATER GREENSBORO CHRYSLER JUNIOR
The Cardinal Golf & Country Club
Greensboro, North Carolina
June 11-14, 2001

THOMAS JUMPS TO EARLY LEAD IN BOYS DIVISION WITH 1-UNDER 69
Miller shoots 1-over-par; leads Girls Division by three shots

GREENSBORO, N.C.-Rodney Thomas of Lexington, N.C., fired a 1-under-par 69 to take the lead in the Boys Division in the AJGA Greater Greensboro Chrysler Junior at The Cardinal Golf & Country Club on Tuesday. Megan Miller of Murrells Inlet, S.C., leads the Girls Division at 1-over-par 71.

The 54-hole tournament, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, features 102 players representing 18 states, Washington, D.C., and Canada, including 36 North Carolina natives.

The 17-year-old Thomas used three birdies and two bogeys in shooting 34-35--69. The N.C. State University-bound Thomas experienced some trouble on No. 9 after hooking a drive left into the woods. Thomas proceeded to lay up short and then hit to the back of the green. However, Thomas drained a 20-foot downhill putt to save par for a 1-under-par 34 on the front nine.

"I expected to do well this week," Thomas said. "I came here two weeks ago to practice and have been playing well lately. I just want to go out tomorrow and keep putting well; the ball-striking will come."

Kyle Metzler of Rancho Murieta, Calif., made two birdies and two bogeys to shoot an even-par round of 34-36--70 and stands alone in second place.

In a five-way tie for third place at 2-over-par are Taylor McNeely (38-34--72) of Duncanville, Texas, Brett Stegmaier (31-41--72) of Madison, Conn., Andrew Medley (37-35--72) of Athens, Ala., Roberto Castro (37-35--72) of Alpharetta, Ga., and Jace Strandberg (33-39--72) of Greensboro, N.C.

Eighteen boys are currently within five strokes of the lead.

In the Girls Division, Megan Miller needed five birdies, four bogeys and one double-bogey to complete her round of 36-35--71. The 17-year-old Miller is trying to improve on her finish last week at the AJGA Henry-Griffits Junior at Furman in Greenville, N.C.

"I never got down today," Miller said. "If I made a bogey, I just tried to make a birdie on the next hole. I'm going to try to shoot around the same number tomorrow."

Andrea Vander Lende (38-36--74) of Longwood, Fla., and Nikki Hadd (36-38--74) of Crestview, Fla., are tied in second place at 4-over-par.

Second-round action begins Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m. For more information about the AJGA Greater Greensboro Chrysler Junior, please contact tournament headquarters at (336) 668-2746 ext. AJGA.
