STILES QUALIFIES FOR FIRST AJGA TOURNAMENT
Granada Takes Home Girls Division Qualifier
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Cole Stiles shot an even-par
72 at the Furman University Golf Club to lead the Boys
Division in Sunday's qualifier for the Henry-Griffitts
Junior at Furman, conducted by the American Junior Golf
Association. Julieta Granada was the sole Girls Division
qualifier with a 1-under 71.
The field for the three-day tournament will feature
78 boys and 21 girls, ages 13-18, representing 15 states
and Canada.
The 17-year-old Stiles will appear in his first AJGA
tournament when action gets under way on Tuesday. The
Athens, Ga., native shot nines of 37-35. He was 2-under-par
on the back nine with birdies on Nos. 11 and 15, but
fell back to even-par with a bogey on No. 17. Stiles
was pleased with his round.
"I chipped and putted very well," Stiles
said. "I didn't hit a lot of fairways, so that
is something that I need to work on for the tournament.
I had to scramble a lot today."
Stiles knows what he needs to do to perform well in
the tournament.
"I just need to keep it in play and hit more fairways,"
Stiles added. "Being in my first tournament, I
know that I will be nervous. I just need to keep the
nerves down."
The other nine open spots went to John Tyler-Griffin
(73), Brady King (74), Matt Cooperrider (74), Chris
Jarman (74), Wesley Carter (75), Michael McCroan (75),
Ben Goforth (75), Jake Creel (75) and Jonathan Henderson
(75). The five players at 3-over 75 got in the tournament
by virtue of a playoff.
In the Girls Division, the 14-year-old Granada carded
35-36 for a total of 1-under-par 71. Granada was the
lone qualifier and will appear in her second AJGA tournament
after playing the AJGA La Purisima Junior last year.
"I played very well," Granada said. "Through
the first five holes, I was 2-under."
For the round, Granada had three birdies and two bogeys.
"I hit my irons very well and I was putting great,"
Granada said. "I just need to keep practicing and
have confidence in my game."
The AJGA Henry-Griffitts Junior at Furman will be highlighted
by Polo Golf Junior All-American Roberto Castro of Alpharetta,
Ga., Tiffany Catafygiotu of Greer, S.C., and Erica Battle
of Columbia, S.C.
