Francis Sits Atop Girls Division at 1-under-par

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Luke List and Abbi Francis captured the leads in their respective divisions after the first-round of the Henry-Griffits Junior at Furman. List heads the Boys Division at 5-under-par 67 and Francis carded a 1-under-par 71 in the Girls Division.

Abbi Francis of Conyers, Ga., holds the first round lead at the Henry-Griffitts Junior at Furman.

The Henry-Griffitts Junior at Furman, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Furman University Golf Club, includes 81 boys and 21 girls, ages 13-18, representing 15 states and Canada.

List, who hails from Ringgold, Ga., had nines of 32-35 en route to his first-round lead.

"I played pretty well and hit all my par 5s," List said. "I birdied the first three holes of the day and I knew I just had to keep doing the right things."

List, a junior at Baylor High School and third-place finisher in the Division II Private School League state championship, only bogeyed one hole.

"On No. 17 there were helicopters that started to circle around the course and I backed away from my putt a couple of times," List said. "But it didn't help. I ended up three-putting for my only bogey."

Playing in his fifth AJGA event, List said in order to stay in contention for the title, he needs to continue working on his drives.

"On this course, it's very important to hit a solid drive," List said. "Plus, you can always work on putting."

Following List are two Clemson University signees. Future teammates Stephen Poole and Brian Duncan each carded 4-under-par 68s to tie for second. Poole, who hails from Spartanburg, S.C., and Duncan, a Greenville native, both scored nines of 34-34. Rounding out the top five are Ben Goforth of Shelby, N.C., and Nick Biershenk of Boiling Springs, S.C., at 3-under-par 69.

Francis, a Conyers, Ga., native, tallied nines of 35-36 as she captured the lead in the Girls Division.

"I came in to the tournament not hitting my driver well," said Francis, a University of Georgia signee. "Today I played the fade that I normally don't have and it worked out well."

Playing in her seventh AJGA tournament, Francis knows what to do to stay in contention for the remainder of the week.

"I had about 31 putts today and that needs to be in the high 20s," Francis said. "On this course you want to be close to the pin, so accuracy is going to be the key."

Francis' closest competitors are Julieta Granada of Bradenton, Fla., and Amy Middleton of Citronelle, Ala., at 2-over-par 74. Granada, who qualified Sunday for the Henry-Griffitts Junior with a 1-under-par 71, carded scores of 38-36 during the first round. Middleton was consistent with 37 on the front and back nines.
