COMPAQ JUNIOR ALL-STAR CLASSIC AT
FIELDSTONE
Fieldstone Golf Club
Greenville, Del.
July 23-25, 2001
NORTHCUTT COMES FROM THREE STROKES
BACK TO WIN AT FIELDSTONE
Reno overcomes five-shot deficit to win Girls
Division
GREENVILLE, Del.-Glenn Northcutt of Dothan,
Ala., fired a final-round 67 at Fieldstone Golf Club
Wednesday to claim the Boys Division title at the Compaq
Junior All-Star Classic at Fieldstone. Jessica Reno
of Wilmington, Del., carded a 2-over-par 73 to take
the Girls Division championship.
The 14-year-old Northcutt shot 3-under on the front
nine and 1-under on the back to finish the tournament
at 1-under-par.
"I struck the ball really well today," Northcutt
said. "I was in good position for birdies all day.
I made some putts and missed some and it turned out
to be a good round."
Northcutt's goal entering the final round was to make
the top-eight but started thinking about a higher finish
on the back nine. He relied on steady play and good
shotmaking coming down the home stretch to grab his
first AJGA win in only his second event.
"When I ran into some trouble, I just stayed focused
and got up-and-down. I knew that 16, 17 and 18 were
good birdie holes. I hit the ball to three feet on 16
and made birdie. After that, I figured it was the golf
tournament if I made par on 18."
Northcutt's first AJGA win is helping him build confidence
for future tournaments.
"The AJGA is the real deal-it's the top level
of junior golf. Everybody wants to play and succeed
out here."
Greg Carlin of Kensington, Md., needed to birdie No.
18 to force a playoff for the Boys Division championship
but made bogey to finish two strokes behind Northcutt
at 72-71--143. Kevin Lozares of Mt. View, Calif., carded
a final-round 71 to finish at 4-over-par 146. Stephen
Walton of West Chester, Pa., finished at 5-over-par
with rounds of 75-72--147. Rounding out the top-five
in a tie for fifth were Brian Steeves of Wappingers
Falls, N.Y., and Jon Curran of Hopkinton, Mass., at
6-over-par 148.
In the Girls Division, Reno used smart decisions to
shoot her best tournament round and win her first AJGA
event. Her win gives her the confidence to compete with
the best players.
"I lost five strokes yesterday because I hit a
driver on a few holes so I tried to play a lot smarter
today," Reno said. "This win makes me think
I can play in AJGA events and beat the best players
out there."
Meredith Godwin of Swarthmore, Pa., finished in second
behind Reno at 75-83--158. Katie Trachok of Upper St.
Clair, Pa., finished in third at 79-84--163.
